S. 1 Religious Day

Back to Our Roots

The ERE Committee organized Religious Afternoon for all our S.1 students with a visit to Ss. Peter and Paul Church, Yuen Long, on the beautiful afternoon of 7th October. The afternoon brought together teachers of the ERE Committee, parishioners of the Church, and our ex-Supervisor, Father Gervais.

The activity aimed to enhance the understanding of our students of Shung Tak’s history which was founded as part of this church. It was a chance to reflect — to learn more about the Church especially as we are a Catholic school; and the predecessors who offered their life and spirit to develop our school. The permanent exhibition “Arma Christi” (Weapons of Christ) and the replica of the Holy Shroud at the church were eye-opening for our S.1 students. To see more details of these two exhibits, and to learn more about the work of Ss. Peter and Paul Church, see the webpage of the Church at (http://www.sspeterandpaul.org.hk/?lang=en).

It was a novel experience for many of our students who have not visited any churches before. We pray that this visit would be one of many and that each and every one of them open their hearts and minds to the works of Jesus. Amen.

Anti Drug On the Go

Stay Clean – Stay Away from Drugs A truck delivering anti-drug information was parked on our badminton court from 8:30 a.m. to -5:00 p.m. on Friday 23rd September 2022. Social workers from the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG) introduced the exhibition. We also had more visuals like the on-truck video show and VR games to get our students in a more interactive mode. During our Friday Other Learning Experiences (OLE) time, S2 students attended a talk in our bigger rooms, Room 117, to know more about the dangers of cannabis and other party drugs. We are also glad that our Ethics and Religious Education Department came one board bringing students from 2J and 2L classes to visit the exhibition truck during their lesson time.

Development and Training of Volunteers

5J Jacky Lam, Donald Li Our school welcomed Ms. Sara Lai, a speaker from the Hong Kong Institute of Volunteers of the Agency for Volunteer Service, to speak to our Secondary 4 and 5 pupils on 23rd September about the development and training of the volunteers’ programme at their agency. Ms. Lai’s talk on the meaning of volunteering is very meaningful and thought-provoking. Through encouraging volunteerism in our daily lives and interacting with our students in fun activities and games, students learned so much more of what it is to volunteer. The promotion of the ‘4C Youth Volunteer Leadership Project,’ will assist students in focusing on their individual development as youth volunteer leaders. The programme would equip them by helping them not only to get a better understanding of themselves but also to understand the needs of their service targets and the general public. This is the ultimate goal of providing ‘Real Service’ to the society with volunteerism. As the MCs for this programme, we hope that we have facilitated the event well. We were first apprehensive, but after a few rehearsals, we felt confident and hope this showed. We look forward to all Shungtakians doing their part to give service to our community!

Spending time with the Elderly at Mid-Autumn Andree Lee (5P)
It was 10th September, Mid-Autumn Festival when our SU, Permeance; the Social Service Society; and the Catholic Society and other Shungtakians went to Long Ping Estate to visit the elderly with helpers from the Caritas Center and from Yuen Long Ss. Peter and Paul Church. Our visit was with the aim to bring some wishes of the Mid-Autumn. We took some moon cakes and other groceries for them. My group visited three flats and for all of them, there was only one person living there, an old lady. Each of them had different reasons for being alone but we are very touched how they made us comfortable to be with them and to share with them. We forgot to be shy and scared. As it was the Mid-Autumn Festival, a day when family members gather together, we were glad we visited them, so that they can have someone to share with and we hoped that we could bring them lovely memories. We can see that the elderly really need love and care and it is sad that they are all alone on this special occasion. I am glad we were able to do a small part. Remember to take the time to offer any elderly you meet a smile. It can mean the world to them. I would remind myself too that I must help the elderly I know with all of my heart. I wish now the best for the ladies our group met that day

Club Orientaion Day

Students get to have the opportunity to choose what clubs to join in our Annual Club Orientation day. Throughout the activity, the enthusiasm of the clubs were put on full display. Even before the commencement of the school year, all the clubs have already been preparing for the event. Some clubs even tried to promote their activities and attract students to join their clubs by dressing up as a historical or cartoon figure, which was very creative and is definitely interesting to see. Their hard work had definitely paid off during the Orientation Day! All students had a blast visiting different stalls and admiring all their eye-catching designs. Looking at the smiley faces of our Shungtakians, it was definitely a huge success. Thanks to the combined effort of all contributing parties and organizers to help make this event smoothly run. However, their work will never stop there. Prepare yourselves for an adventure with lots of events prepared and designed by our student leaders!
