School Song

The school song was written by Fr. Paul Lau Wing Yiu (1908-1986) in February 1964.

Fr. Lau was born in Wanchai, Hong Kong, on 8th December 1908 and entered the Diocesan Minor Seminary in 1918. In 1934, he was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Henry Valtorta PIME., in the Cathedral of Hong Kong. He was also one of the first groups of priests to complete his studies in the newly founded Regional Seminary for South China, Aberdeen, Hong Kong.

After ordination he served for twelve years as an assistant parish priest in Guangtung-in San-mei, Tsip-tsing, and in Waichau. In 1946, he returned to Hong Kong, first as rector of Tai Long, New Territories from 1946 until 1951, and then as assistant parish priest in the Cathedral from 1951 till 1957; St. Teresa’s between 1957 and 1961, Our Lady of the Rosary from 1961 till 1963, and the Cathedral again from 1963 to the end of his life.

Father Lau not only was renowned for the spreading of the Word of God, but his awareness of the shortage of good Catholic hymns and chants, he devoted much of his later life to filling the gap. He left to the Chinese-speaking Church a legacy of noble music, our School Song being one of his masterpieces.

Father Lau had a deep devotion to Our Lady and died peacefully, in St. Paul’s Hospital in the morning of Saturday, September 13, 1986, aged 78.
