“Together We Stride” on April 23rd

By 5J Cherry Chui In order to make an all-out effort to support the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong, I joined a fundraising walkathon called “Together We Stride” on April 23rd. This fundraising event has all the funds raised going to the building and development of churches. We walked from the Amphitheatre in Hong Kong Science Park to Pak Shek Kok Park in Shatin. At the beginning, I believed that it would be a tough walkathon as I needed to complete a 3-kilometer walk. However, it turned out to be an achievable mission for me. During the walk, many of the volunteer helpers of the event stationed along the route, gave many words encouragement to all of us participants. I felt that I was personally accompanied with love and this gave me the strength and the determination to finish this walkathon. Also accompanying me along the route, were many other participants from other schools and organizations. Can you imagine that even kindergarten students and retired elderly individuals joined to support the cause? I could see their passion for helping others, and I was enthralled by their enthusiasm. These people too with their hellos and their smiles encouraged me to break my limits. After achieving the goal and completing this walkathon, although I felt exhausted, I was ecstatic and filled with deep joy and happiness. Volunteering is certainly a meaningful activity and this precious experience will certainly be a milestone on my road to volunteering.

S4 Bible Drama

By 4L Spring Fong 21st of April, was a day to be looked forward to for us in the Fourth Form. It was the day of the bible drama competition. All 4 classes spared no efforts on trying their best to present the reworked and modernized stories in the bible through drama. It was no doubt to say the competition was a memorable experience to all of us. We spent more than a month preparing for the competition, the lines of the characters, the costumes, the amazing effects, etc. Throughout the whole process, we learnt how to cooperate well, how to present stories through dramas, and of course, the moral values behind the bible stories like how to show love to others and how to be considerate of others. Despite some failures, like forgetting the lines or having some minor conflicts, we prevailed and every experience I would say, strengthened us. We did better and better and finally we brought our drams to the stage, to the audience. Learning the bible stories through drama is fun, inspiring, entertaining and of course educational. I could really feel the excitement when we were cheering for our friends and laughing as we watched hilarious scenes. The Bible Drama way of teaching is a golden opportunity to expose us to the Catholic religion and to Jesus. Rather than sitting in the classroom, having a different and more active way of learning like this in E&RE is effective in increasing our passion in learning.

Easter lunch service 2023

By 2L Daisy Liu On the 16th of April, our school volunteer team, Permeance, along with other Shungtakians, set off to our sister school, Yuen Long Catholic Secondary School, to help serve lunch to the elderly who were participating in an Easter lunch service. On the day of the event, our team set up tables for the elderly, ensuring they were clean before we seated our elderly. We wanted our guests to be comfortable while eating. The lunch event began with a performance, which the elderly enjoyed from their tables. It was heart-warming to see the elderly smile and clap as they joined in for the performance of the song ‘The Flower Princess’. After the performance, we grouped together as a team to serve lunch. During lunch, the atmosphere was lively as our guests enjoyed their meal as they chatted with each other. The meal was followed by a lucky draw which they were thrilled to participate in. The small prizes were a bonus. At the end of the event, each one of our guests were gifted a bag of rice and noodles. Their smiles were heart-warming, and our hearts were filled with joy as we were all so happy to have volunteered in such a meaningful event.

English-Ambassadors-Visit-to-Tai-O

On the 14th of April, 39 English Ambassadors participated in the Tai O Cultural Tour which saw them visit and explore the Tai O and Ngong Ping areas on Lantau. The trip was a reward for their service as members of the English-for-All Days English Ambassadors Team and the school sponsored part of the fees for the trip. On this trip, the Ambassadors had a chance to ride the Ngong Ping 360 cable car, have a guided tour of Tai O, and climb the steps to the Big Buddha while visiting Po Lin Monastery. They saw the stilt houses and walked across the different bridges in Tai O. They even had the chance to take part in the process of making salted eggs, a traditional product of Tai O. During the tour, the Ambassadors were divided into groups and each group had to do research on certain attractions prior to the trip. They then had to introduce these destinations and attractions to all the other Ambassadors. We all learnt a great deal about the bridges in Tai O, Ngong Ping Village, and the Big Buddha, to name a few. Do you know how many steps you need to climb to get to the base of the Big Buddha? A lot! It was a truly rewarding and fulfilling experience for the English Ambassadors. We hope that this reward can encourage them to double their efforts in maintaining and enhancing the English-centric atmosphere in Shung Tak.

Hunger Meal – “Food and Justice”

Hunger Meal – “Food and Justice” By 5J Rain Ng The Hunger Meal was an activity in which students learn about the relationship between Food and Justice. On 29th March, all S5 students were invited to a lunch gathering at the school hall. They were randomly assigned into 3 groups with different levels of income – the rich, the middle class, and the grassroots. The quality and quantity of the meals they received were specifically arranged according to their social status. During the activity, Mr. Porson Chan from the Diocesan Commission for Integral Human Development, and Mr. Lau Hoi Lung from the CUHK Agricultural Development Group, shared with students on the theme ‘Food and Justice’. Through the experience of the hunger meal and the sharing of the guests, we learned to be grateful for the food we enjoy every day and the importance of giving a helping hand to the needy so as to help fight against discrimination towards them. We also got to know that we can chase our dreams and be happy even if we are poor. Therefore, we should never give up no matter what obstacles we face. As one of the helpers in the hunger meal, this activity means much more than a lesson about reducing food waste to me because I also gained a lot from organizing it. The major difficulties that I encountered included the selection of food and the arrangements of the day. The decision on the provided meals had to be changed several times in order to make the preparation process more convenient and, at the same time, to ensure participants could be full after having their meals. On top of that, organizing the hunger meal requires extensive teamwork and communication since many tasks had to be designed precisely to deliver certain hidden messages, such as how we should welcome different groups when they entered the hall; how we could illustrate the power of the small group of rich people over the lower social class groups; and how to determine the change of their identity through games during the meal. All these were designed to simulate the real situation of food injustice that is happening around the world. On the whole, this experience did not only teach me to treasure our food, but it also showed me how difficult it is for any organizers to prepare a satisfactory event for people to enjoy. I will always respect food producers and event organizers in the future.

S4 Excursion

On 29th March, a hot summer afternoon, two S4 classes set off for Crossroads Foundation, where we were immersed in the harsh realities of extreme poverty as part of our excursion for the year. It was both eye-opening and meaningful. Reality for the Poor Learning about poverty from books or from the Internet could never be the same as experiencing it and it is with this goal, that the excursion was planned. We needed to experience the struggles of impoverished communities before we can develop a true understanding and a greater sense of empathy towards those who are less fortunate than us. This began with us sitting in a bleak and spartan room, much like a military camp, where our facilitator, Mr David Begbie, implored us to explore the systemic injustices in our world and recognise that there is something wrong with it. Being brought up in Hong Kong, an affluent urban area, most of us have little exposure to the harsh realities of poverty, except when watching the occasional charity appeal on television. This experience made us comprehend the stark reality that there are people in this world who struggle to attain even the most basic of necessities, such as food, shelter, education, and sanitation. Eye-opening Lessons Learned Through the excursion, we learned that breaking free from the cycle of poverty is an arduous task, one that is made nearly impossible by the numerous hurdles to those born into impoverished families. We experienced firsthand the daily struggle to make a living and were struck by the dehumanising and unfair nature of poverty. In the simulation, we had to beg and grovel to sell our paper bags to get on the good side of the shopkeepers and if we failed to appease them, they would rip our bags apart right in front of our faces! We were even forced to part with our valuables, even resorting to selling our kidneys or giving ‘hugs’ just to survive. It was heartbreaking when we realised that the ‘hugs’ were a metaphor for young people being snatched away and forced into lives of prostitution and exploitation just to feed their families. Following the simulation, we engaged in a reflective discussion to explore various ways to break the cycle of poverty, such as providing accessible education and meals to children or offering family planning education to parents. We recognised that there are countless ways to address this issue, but most importantly, that we should do something. Until we collectively realise the magnitude of the problems and take concerted steps to address the cycle of poverty, it will continue to destroy the lives of countless individuals. Going Beyond the Classroom Expanding our learning experiences is crucial for our holistic development as it broadens our perspectives and enriches our personal and professional growth. Through participation in new activities, such as this excursion, we can gain a deeper understanding of the issues that afflict our world and are motivated to take actions to address them. We acquire new skills and knowledge in diverse fields and may even discover a calling to work in those fields. Such learning experiences enable us to develop cultural awareness and empathy towards those from different backgrounds and circumstances. The Crossroads excursion enabled us to step into the shoes of the impoverished and comprehend their struggles from their perspectives. We emerged with a greater appreciation for the human experience and a desire to make a positive impact on the world. The Crossroads excursion was a powerful and transformative learning experience that left a deep impression in our hearts. It taught us to be more empathetic and engaged citizens of the world, and we are grateful for the opportunity to have participated in such a meaningful activity. We look forward to joining more activities in the future!
