Recently, 5L Abbie Mak won the champion in ‘Smile! Say Bye to COVID’ Mask Design Competition! The competition is organized by Hong Kong Thoracic Society and Chest Delegation (Hong Kong and Macau), and the champion’s design would be made into actual masks for the charity bazaar. Her design stood out from the other 1200 pieces and was chosen by the judging panel including Dr. Zhong Nanshan, Dr. Lo Chung-mau, and Dr. Hui Shu-cheong.
Abbie’s awarded design emphasizes happiness throughout the adversities of COVID. The symbols on the mask design, including lungs, virus, and washing hand icons remind us of the reason why we were wearing masks. The high-saturated colours of the rainbow express the hope for the epidemic to be driven away, and for everything to recover. The symbolic icon of smiling in the center points out the importance of joy even though we are facing difficulties.
Congratulations Abbie!

“Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature:” (Mark 16:15). The Catholic Society participated in the ‘Gospel Preaching Fun Fair 2022 in Hung Shui Kiu’, organised by the Parish of St. Jerome, held on our school campus. The meaningful and unforgettable experience for our fellow executive members came together as we of the Catholic Society to preach His loving care to the neighbourhood, set up two game stalls for visitors to come and learn the gospel through playing our games. We were also able to promote the Catholic core values of Truth, Justice, Love, Life and Family. For me personally, it was beneficial as I not only developed a lot of skills when working with other executive members to prepare for the day but also on the day as we needed to manage two different game booths at the same time, and teach people of all ages, from the very young to the old, how to play different games. The process was quite challenging, but the experience was fruitful and meaningful to me. One of the most memorable moments that I would like to share from the event is interacting with children and inviting them to answer questions. I thought that the children were too young to understand the messages of the gospel, yet they were active and engaging in the game and very good at hitting the target! By seeing the smile on their face, I can feel the pure joy of preaching the gospel. I am looking forward to hosting more upcoming events this academic with the Catholic Society and am ready to share His gospel with love.

“Self-reflection is the key for improvement.”, and the speaking practice with Heung Yee Kuk precisely provided me with a golden opportunity to polish my speaking skills. Before the practice, I felt quite unprepared for my DSE speaking examination as I felt unprepared for the unknown. In this experience, not only was I given valuable feedback from group mates who are not my school mates and people I know well, but I was also provided with practice advice from them for improvement. An instance, was when I was reminded to speak up as I did not even realise I wasn’t loud enough. To me, this is a very important piece of advice because despite how articulate I am, I won’t be able to impress the markers if they cannot hear me. Another thing I found this experience helpful with was that I got to meet candidates of different English levels. The oral examination is not an individual presentation, instead it is a discussion that requires you to show empathy to your group mates. Hence, as I’ve encountered both strong and mediocre speakers during the experience, I knew how to sustain the conversation in both circumstances. This is particularly important when it comes to group discussion as you won’t want the teachers to view you as an egocentric candidate who isn’t willing to help the weaker ones. This experience has equipped me with additional useful speaking skills and has boosted my confidence.

Make Memories with Your Feet The pandemic has affected all of us. Fortunately, with the passage of time, we see improvements in the situation and things going back to the way they were. With this, many activities have resumed. And with this, the Dance Club had the chance to promote dance and bring joyful experiences to all schoolmates. In mid-December, we held the MV Imitation Competition. In the competition, students have to learn the choreography for the songs they can decide to do a whole creative and choreograph themselves. It was a pleasure to give our schoolmates an opportunity to challenge themselves and display their talent in dancing. Contestants certainly gained precious experience in how to perform well. The competition brought unforgettable memories to students, including the participants and the audience. Gleefully, our Club has created delightful moments for the schoolmates. We’ll do our best to continue promoting dance at school. Dance with us and enjoy each step along the way !

The extra touch wight ECA Activities
THE EXTRA TOUCH WITH ECA ACTIVITIES Fourth Formers have joined 6 lessons of extra-circular activities, from late October to early November. Based on interest, S.4 students were able to choose from 10 different activities. These included classes to help with language, that of Spanish; to skill classes like latte art class, guitar class and even a dart-throwing workshop. For those of us who wanted to give service, we can join the Social Service Group, Guidelight. To improve our knowledge, we had the hydroponics workshop, sign language class, and a STEM class. And for those who wanted that extra touch, we had the etiquette and cosmetology class. These classes all aimed to further enhance the generic skills of Shungtakians and explore their potential in different areas. Here is what Shungtakians felt: Spanish Class:Trilingual is never a full stop “Muy bien”—means “very good” in Spanish. Through lessons, students can learn simple vocabulary. “Picking up a new language must be hard” has always been a misconception for students. However, the statement has been proven wrong as can be seen from S4 students’ feedback. With interesting and interactive activities in lessons, students surely can have an unforgettable experience. Latte Art Class:Art and Life Most of the students have never tried latte art before. It may seem easy from the teacher’s demonstration, but it requires many techniques. Students felt satisfied when they were able to create art with milk on coffee and the best part was that they can enjoy a steaming hot coffee with their created masterpieces on top at the end of the class. Hydroponics Workshop :Life and Love Through lessons, students can have a short experience of being a farmer and giving birth to the life of new plants. They also had to nurture the seedlings. It was never easy keeping them hydrated and absorbing enough nutrients and sunshine. Although some seedlings died during the process, students can learn from their mistakes. Life can be vulnerable, but it can also be strong. With the growth of plants, students can learn a life lesson while enjoying a delicious harvest.

The time has come for the start of the school year. Students are all excited to come to school again after the holiday. The highlight of the opening day is the handover ceremony. It is when the former student leaders pass the torch to the upcoming student leaders, continuing the spirit of servant leadership. It marks the start of their duty to serve, but not to be served. Bearing the name and duty of a student leader is never easy. However, it is certain that all of them are more than willing to give all they have and work together to create a better school atmosphere. Let us all look forward to having a fruitful and unforgettable 2022-2023 school year!
