Opening Prayer Service 2023

By 2J Jeanie Lee & 2L Cheryl Lam The Opening Prayer Service was held on 4th September and Father Li, our school Supervisor, celebrated the Service with us. With God’s guidance and the help of our pastoral worker, Mr Mak, we were able to bring the Hall alive with prayer and hymns. The beginning of the year is important and as Father said in the homily “a good start is a half of the successes”. This message reminded me of a saying in a Chinese proverb, “plan a year in spring and plan a day in the morning.” Father encouraged us to reflect on what we are planning to do in the coming academic year and very importantly too, we need to start every one of our school days with morning prayer. Apart from planning, Father also pointed out that action speaks louder than words. It is important to execute the plan as this alone can lead to success. He then reminded us of the school motto pointing to the banner at the back of the school hall, “Pray and Work”. At the end, Father also said, ‘a bad start is also the other half of the successes.’ To get that success, however, we need to realise that this start was not a good one. Afterall, it is true that we can have also bad starts but we must remember that with strong faith in God, we can all be successful. We need to be willing to change. With the grace of God and His and the continued guidance of Ss. Peter and Paul, we look forward to a wonderful year ahead especially since it also marks the year when our 65th Anniversary would be kicked off.

Metaverse Creators of Tomorrow Competition

Journey to VR Jurassic Park The audience is buzzing with excitement as the three students from Shung Tak Catholic English College, Chan Pui Hang, Jiang Kit Hoi, and Shum Ho Yeung, prepare to present their Metaverse creation at the Polytechnic University of Hong Kong. This extraordinary team from STC, who have taken on the challenge of creating a Jurassic Park in a VR environment, presented an immersive Jurassic Park experience in the metaverse. Their goal was to transport visitors back in time to a world filled with awe-inspiring dinosaurs. To achieve this extraordinary feat, the team combined cutting-edge virtual reality technology with detailed 3D modelling. The aim is for visitors to explore a realistic and dynamic environment, where they can witness dinosaurs roam freely in their natural habitats. Interactive elements are incorporated to the virtual Jurassic world to create an educational experience as well. Club Orientation Day 2023 2024

Club Orientation Day 2023-2024 During our Annual Club Orientation Day, students were given the exciting opportunity to choose which clubs they wanted to join. The enthusiasm of the clubs was on full display throughout the event. Before this big day and even with the Black Rainstorm Rain signal hoisted the week before putting some delay to our activities, our enthusiasm could not be dampened. In fact, even before the start of the school year, all the clubs had been diligently preparing for this special day, so we were prepared, no matter what happened! Some clubs, on the day, went the extra mile to promote their activities and attract students by dressing up as historical or cartoon figures, showcasing their creativity and adding an interesting touch to the event. Their hard work definitely made it all worthwhile, as it added an extra element to the event, All students had a fantastic time exploring different stalls and admiring the eye-catching designs. The smiles on the faces of our Shungtakians were a testament to the tremendous success of the event. We are grateful for the combined efforts of all the contributing parties and organizers who worked tirelessly to ensure the smooth running of the event.

A Warm Welcome to Secondary One Schoolmates

A “Warm” Welcome to Secondary One Schoolmates 4L Andy Huang We are excited to announce the great success of the Secondary One Orientation Day held on August 29, 2023. As the mercury soared to a sizzling 30 degrees Celsius on that day, we extended a “warm” welcome to all our Secondary One schoolmates. The heat did nothing but boost, if not fuel, their enthusiasm and energy as they engaged in a series of activities organized by students from the Leadership Training Programme. All was aimed to introduce our newcomers to the vibrant life at our school and foster connections among their fellow schoolmates. The event kicked off with a Welcome Speech by our principal, Dr Cecilia Tang. She emphasized the importance of self-regulated learning, trust, care, excellence, and commitment (STCEC) in the students’ coming school life at secondary school. Following the speech, the S1 students took part in a guidance session which helped them better prepare for their time in Shung Tak. They also had the opportunity to learn more about the Students’ Union and our Houses, where they met their House Captains and chanted our traditional slogan of ‘Hip, hip, hurray!’. With the guidance of senior students, the S1 students then engaged in mass games before they embarked on an exciting 1.5-hour-long school hunt. During the hunt, they completed different tasks on each floor to gather all the pieces of the puzzle, while the senior students provided brief introductions to the school facilities. Not only did the S1 students gain a better understanding of our school, but they also experienced the vibrant campus atmosphere of Shung Tak. It was all worth the sweat! We hope they will enjoy the school life in Shung Tak. Of course, besides the joy and excitement, let us not forget our school motto, “Ora et Labora”, meaning ‘work and pray’. With this motto in mind, we eagerly anticipate a fruitful and promising school year ahead.

S1 Orientation Day

S1 Orientation Day 2J Aiden & 2L Jasmine We were honoured to serve as the emcees of the S1 Orientation Day. It was truly an unforgettable experience, one we trained for since last year when we listened to older Shungtakians talk about STC. Our turn came at last. Being an emcee isn’t easy since we had to deal with unpredictable incidents. And sure enough things didn’t go as we had planned. Fortunately, we remained calm and adapted on the spot. It was not too bad as I would say we had a good partnership which improved with time. The event began with a welcome speech delivered by our Principal, Dr. Tang. Next, our Vice Principal, Mr. Kwan, and Ms. SM Wong introduced the history of our school and academics at the school. Other key head teachers of different committees and the chairperson of the PTA also presented information to help our S.1 students and parents know more about STC and to help them to adapt to STC. Being emcees was certainly an unforgettable experience for us! There was a lot to learn about speaking on stage, teamwork and dealing with unforeseen situations.

Youth Law Summit 2023

The Youth Law Summit 2023, organized by the Hong Kong Schools Mooting and Mock Trial Association and Hong Kong Shue Yan University, was a great opportunity to learn beyond our classrooms. This four-day programme, consisting of three main components — lectures, tutorials, and mooting, covered topics which included the Hong Kong legal system, criminal law, and evidence law. Tutorials that followed were led by law students who answered our questions and explained concepts that we didn’t understand. They also guided us in analyzing specific topics and provided real-life examples to further our understanding. After engaging in a wide range of law-related activities, we had the opportunity to experience mooting and delve into the work of barristers. We participated in a mock trial involving a case about trafficking dangerous drugs. We learned skills in presenting the cases for both the prosecution and the defense. The Summit offered a fantastic and rewarding opportunity to deepen our knowledge of Hong Kong’s legal system and at the same time, practice our art of refutation.
