HKOSA Prize Giving – Gemmi Cheung

When I was in S4, I was honoured to be nominated to join the Hong Kong Outstanding Students Award by my school. Established in 1985, HKOSA recognises promising students with outstanding academic, extracurricular, and community service achievements and morality. All Finalists of the Award are invited to join the HKOSA Association, which has evolved into a diverse community of more than 1,000 Award Alumni, including social leaders, entrepreneurs, and professionals. ‘Giving is Outstanding’ is the slogan of the award, which encourages us to contribute to society. I have learned so much and broadened my horizons on this one and a half-year journey. From the 400 candidates that sat the written test to the final 20 individual interviews, I have met so many different OSArs. Each stage of the award interview is unforgettable and will definitely be a lifelong memory for me. One highlight was the assessment camp which was held in June 2021. Due to COVID-19 restrictions at the time, the usual overnight camp was not possible, so a two-day camp was held instead. Even though it was not overnight, we had enough time to be with the other participants and learn about each other. Being an OSAr does not only require our academic abilities, but also calls upon our personalities, actions, and understanding of society. We formed teams and played different games to train our team spirit as well as show our own uniqueness. My team colour was green, and my team was called ‘Greenish Green’. Although we didn’t know whether we would meet again in the future, we treasured the moments we had at that time. We were all genuine with our peers and showed the real version of ourselves during the camp. After passing the assessment camp, we became official OSArs. There was a wide variety of ‘enrichment programmes’ provided by the Youth Arch Foundation, such as excursions sharings about different topics from past members of OSA. We could ask questions and chat with them to share opinions at dinner or lunch gatherings. Moreover, past members were paired up with students who are interested in studying overseas, to act as their mentors. In the programmes, we would learn more about real experiences from past OSArs and get their genuine and valuable opinions. In the finalist sharing session, I chose to present on “”Special Educational Need Students”. “”Every kid is unique”” was my presentation title. Every student has their own personality and hobby and no one should be discriminated against because of their differences. I also heard some brilliant talks from other OSArs. Some of them who are also secondary school students had organised NGOs and were even representatives of the Hong Kong girl’s football team. Most of them targeted education inequality and even organised different enterprises like second-hand book shops and tutoring platforms. Seeing these outstanding performers, I truly understood the meaning of the term – “There is always a taller mountain”. We may think we are strong already, but we should never be overconfident or arrogant. On the other hand, we should not look down on ourselves or others because everyone has hidden talents and abilities. In a nutshell, I learned so much and broadened my horizons with the HKOSA, and I am glad to have been a part of it. I still couldn’t believe that I have been through so many stages and interviews, and it has been a blessing for me at each stage. The OSAr family is very special. There is a bond between present and past members and they are all willing to share and give opinions to each other. I met truly talented peers in society, and I was able to interact with them. This was undoubtedly a rare and precious experience and now, I have a brand-new interpretation for the meaning of ‘outstanding’. I hope whoever is reading this can also step out of their comfort zone and remember that ‘outstanding is giving’. Contribute to society while being excellent with your own skills!

Le Cordon Bleu Pastry Course

In the Kitchen with Le Cordon Bleu Pastry Course Have you ever heard of Le Cordon Bleu? Well, read on to learn more. Le Cordon Bleu is a world-renowned culinary school from which many famous chefs graduate. During the Lunar New Year holidays, we had the opportunity to meet a chef who graduated from Le Cordon Bleu and is now working in a Michelin two-star restaurant. The creation was cupcakes in the Chinese and Western styles. But we also had the chance to learn from the chef’s learning experience at Le Cordon Bleu. Students were able to see that the journey to become a professional chef required a lot of time and work. When we, Shungtakians, started to make the cupcakes, the chef taught us exactly how to measure the ingredients and how to use the kitchen tools. The chef also taught us how to frost cakes using many different patterns. It was certainly a time for us to show our creativity as we explored with our own patterns. The Lunar holidays were made greater with this experience where we were able to acquire some new skills, and make something delicious to eat.

Kanya Lee Scholarship Award Presentation Ceremony

STEM Experience Program for Secondary Students – Kanya Lee Scholarship Recognition Ceremony 2022 Our Principal, Dr. Tang, and six awarded students attended the Kanya Lee Scholarship Recognition Ceremony in the Hyatt Regency Hong Kong, Tsim Sha Tsui on 22nd December. The scholarship, established in 2021, aims to provide financial support to students who are interested in STEM and scientific research. The Founder and Director of Lee’s Pharmaceutical Holdings Limited, Dr Benjamin Xiao-Yi Li, principals and students from 6 secondary schools in the New Territories West were given greater insights as they reviewed the achievement of the participants. Our students were inspired by Dr. Benjamin Li’s “Failure is just a setback on our pathways to success and fulfilment in research and development. It will motivate and inspire us for improvement. There is no short cut to success”. They were encouraged not to give up on their dreams, and to ‘chase their dreams’ which echoes the message of Dr Tang this academic year. Lee’s Pharm would continue in supporting our young people financially so that money would not be the barrier to their success. It gives students of Hong Kong , to chase their dream through this Kanya Lee Scholarship Program.

M Yayoi Kusama 1945 to Now

Discovering Yayoi Kusama’s World of Dots at M+ Museum – Samson Chan 5M
The Visual Arts Department organized a visit to the M+ Museum on December 21 to see the works of Yayoi Kusama in the “Yayoi Kusama 1945 to Now” Exhibition. I was struck by the strong personal style of Yayoi Kusama that permeated the entire space. The exhibition was filled with dots which initially left me confused about their meaning. However, I soon learned they represented infinity, an abstract concept that fascinated Kusama and inspired much of her work.
One of the prominent themes in Kusama’s artwork is death. Her fear during the war can be seen through her use of different puzzles to embody her feelings, creating a tight and oppressive atmosphere that resonated with us visitors. What impressed me most about Kusama’s art was her ability to express herself using a wide range of materials and techniques. She didn’t limit herself to colours and painting dots but also used newspapers, cutting them into dot shapes to create intriguing compositions.
It’s no surprise that Kusama is considered a celebrated icon of Japanese art. Her experiences and how she fulfilled her life should be highly respected. Her art reflects her unique perspective on the world, and her willingness to explore abstract ideas sets her apart as one of the most fascinating artists of our time.

Christmas Ball

The STC Christmas Ball Christmas is a time to love! This year, the most anticipated festival of the year was celebrated by two events. The traditional Christmas Celebration was on once again. Games were played that included ‘Guess the Teacher’ and ‘Stack up Cups’. We also witnessed the spectacular performances from the Dance Club, winners of the MV competition and the A capella Team. All Shungtakians had a wonderful morning. When night fell on 24th December, we celebrated the season with the Christmas Ball and the event which had been halted during the pandemic drew lots of attention from our senior form students who were all overjoyed that the event was back on. The night was once to remember with laughter and joy of the season all around. But with all the celebrations of the season, and gifts to go around, one must always remember that Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Christ. We wish all a very Merry and Blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Christmas Prayer Service 2022

The Christmas Prayer Service was successfully held on 20th December 2022. Our former School Supervisor, Rev. Gervais Baudry IVE, was the celebrant. It was a wonderful chance for Shungtakians to gather at school and celebrate the nativity of Jesus and offer our prayers in the Service. In the homily, Father Gervais reminded all Shungtakians of the true meaning of Christmas and how we should love others in our daily lives. A highlight of the Service was the micro-movie produced by the Catholic Society on where Jesus was and how we could find Jesus at Christmas. The video can be found on the Catholic Society’s Instagram page. @catso_stc . Let us thank God for how He revealed His love through the nativity of Jesus. “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” (Matthew 18:20)
