Christmas Concert In Praise Thanksgiving

Christmas Concert In Praise & Thanksgiving The Orchestra 5M Abby Hon To celebrate the coming of our saviour, Jesus; and in thanksgiving for the blessings received for 70 years, a Christmas Concert was held on 18th December 2022 at the parish of Ss. Peter and Paul in Yuen Long. Some of the music teams of our school, Shung Tak, was invited as the special guests. Our orchestra performed two orchestral pieces, For the first piece, Sleigh Ride, composed by Mozart in 1791, it was performed with a series of repeated musical phrases passing between different instruments before the sleigh bells sounded. The dynamic changes of the sleigh bells made the piece appear as if the sleigh was being ridden in the snow. This heightened the atmosphere of Christmas. For the second piece, Christmas Medley included 10 interesting and famous Christmas carols which included: Joy to the World, We Wish You a Merry Christmas and Jingle Bells. This was arranged by our conductor, Ms Chan. This is the first performance outside school since COVID-19 hit and the orchestra gave it their all with the hope that the message of Christmas and celebration can be felt in the music. When the applause broke out, we all knew the performance was a great success and all the hard work was worthwhile! The A cappella Team 5L Abbie Mak The a cappella team., Detonate, performed two Christmas songs, including “Mary Did You Know?” and “That’s Christmas to Me”. For “Mary Did You Know”, the words for this song were written by former Gaither Vocal Band baritone singer, Mark Lowry, whose pastor had asked that he write a Christmas musical for their church. Lowry ended up penning a series of monologues based on Christmas songs including a conversation with Mary about the birth and life of her son, Jesus. And the second song, That’s Christmas to Me, is a song that focuses on the nostalgia of Christmas. Pentatonix’s Kevin Olusola said, “For us, we are gone so much on the road. The only time we get to spend with family is during Christmas, so we wanted to write a song that kind of focuses on that.” Besides, our alumni a cappella team performed the song “Just Carry On”, which is originally by Terence Lam. This song encourages people to persist even under an overwhelmingly tough situation. The new a cappella version was arranged by this group of talented former Shungtakians. Our a cappella teams successfully conveyed the warmth and love of Christmas and the joy of Jesus’s birth through these two songs. It was surely a wonderful blessing that our 2-month practice paid off.

Operation Santa Claus 2022

Sending Our Message of Love, One Charity at a Time!

As the curtains rose for the year’s winter, Operation Santa Claus followed along in quick steps. On 16 December, enveloped by the love of students, parents, teachers, and staff, the 28th rendition of STC’s annual support for OSC started with a bang. With everyone pouring their hearts and souls into the event, we were able to raise a new STC record of HK$73,888. Same as every OSC prior, Operation Santa Claus@STC collects money donated through many different sources and focuses on one charity . This year, our OSC Committee decided to highlight the works of Pathways Foundation, an organisation that helps dyslexic children by providing professional help and evidence-based intervention programmes. The development of dyslexic children and providing necessary and appropriate help is Pathways’ top priority. This year, the holiday cheer kicked in with students flooding the school with joy on their faces. Students were allowed to dress casually and wear an OSC sticker with a $10 donation and an OSC pin with a $20 donation. But one of the highlights of this activity would see teachers dressing up as Christmas trees, the result of this year’s pay-to-vote booth. Some teachers wore simple decorations on their clothing, while some went all out and had lights draped across their clothes flashing and sparkling as they walked along the corridors. Certainly not a metaphor when we say, ‘lighting up the room’. As the lunch bell rang, students rushed out of their classrooms. Heading down to their respective stalls and trying to beat the inevitable lines, the liveliness of the covered playground increased significantly. Although the rain from the day before had dashed any plans of holding the festivities on the open playground, we all still found enough space to enjoy ourselves in the covered playground and hall. The school was filled to the brim with holiday cheer and laughter and students enjoying some delicious and warm food and playing addictively fun games. Many of the senior classes and the PTA worked tirelessly to offer treats ranging from filling Takoyaki to cakes and marshmallows for dessert . Students could be seen happily gulping down fresh cups of fruit punch or warm bottles of boba tea. With all the cheer and joy, barely anyone noticed the drizzling rain as they enjoyed the atmosphere of the stalls. Shung Tak has once again endeavoured to give back with kindness and love . Thank you all for your participation in this year’s Operation Santa Claus, for the willingness to share with others in need, and letting the spirit of Christmas thrive in Shung Tak.

Speech Day

SPEECH DAY 2022

Good afternoon to our guest of honour – Dr. Emily Chan, Sr. Michelle, Mr. Long, School Managers, principals, alumni, parents, teachers and graduates,

Welcome to Shung Tak Speech Day for Class 2022. We are thrilled to have our school managers, principals, parents, teachers and graduates 2021-2022 gathered together on this special occasion.  My deepest gratitude goes to our alumna, Dr Emily Chan, a Specialist in Neurosurgery and an Associate Consultant in Prince of Wales Hospital for agreeing to come back to her alma mater and share with our graduates of their special day.  I am sure Dr Chan has already prepared many inspiring stories to share with us.  We are also very privileged to have our former Supervisor and Principal, Mr. Malcom Long, to be with us this afternoon.

SCHOOL’S MAJOR CONCERNS

Dear graduates, I hope you still remember the school’s major concerns of the recent three years, as these concerns represent what the school hopes to see you achieve:

1. To further consolidate the generic skills of our students to enable them to become reflective learners; and
2. To further inculcate the Catholic core values through service learning.

Generic skills enable us to organise, adapt, and strategically apply our skills in different situations, which is crucial in this fast-changing world.  However, one must not forget that besides generic skills, reflection is the most important part when it comes to learning.  It helps us make sense of the past and plan for our future.

Knowledge and skills aside, values are equally important. Mother Teresa once said, “Faith in action is Love, and Love in action is Service”.  Servant leadership is what Catholic education aims at.  By learning and applying the five Catholic core values, you learn the essence of Catholic education.

RESULTS IN PUBLIC EXAMINATION

One of the outcomes of quality education is the results in public examination.  For our results in DSE 2022, Shung Tak continued to do well. Compared with 2021, improvement was seen in the subjects of English Language, Physics, Geography and Mathematics Extended Part Module 1 which showed an increase in the percentage of Level 5**. Also, in Ethics and Religious Studies, Chinese History, Chinese Literature, Geography and Physics, we saw an increase in the percentage of Level 5* & above. It is pleasing to report that, as last year, we have a total of 13 subjects reaching 100% of Level 2, which does not include Chinese and English which we expect our graduates to obtain at least a Level 3. In other words, we have 15 subjects reaching a Level 2. Congratulations.

WHAT DO THESE RESULTS MEAN TO US HERE AT SHUNG TAK?

In Shung Tak, we aim for each of our students to achieve the best they can. This means we cater for all.  Teachers will keep up their hard work supporting average and weaker students with an aim of having all students achieve at least of a minimum of a Level 2. Of course, we shall also continue to stretch the school’s more able students to do their best. The ultimate aim is that the average level of performance can be of a Level 4.  We have achieved our aims. A total of 90.2% of students received JUPAS offers, of which 89.3% were degree offers, and 37.5% were from the top 3 local universities. In addition to our academic aims and despite the pandemic, we have reached a record of 1621.5 hours of social service served, with 357 students reported doing voluntary work outside school, compared with 691.55 hours and only 139 involved the year before. One student obtained a gold certificate (more than 53 hours), two students were awarded a silver certificate (27 to 52 hours), six students got a bronze certificate (13 to 26 hours), and 90 students got a certificate of merit (5 to 12 hours) in the social service hours record scheme.  This is evidence of Shungtakians’ spirit – in love we serve and blossom.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL GRADUATES

This afternoon is a momentous occasion for our graduate Shungtakians to reflect on the culmination of the years of hard work; the actualization of goals attained, and the acknowledgement of successes achieved.  All of you came from 34 different primary schools as Shungtakians, spent years of prayer and work together; encountered trials and tribulations; shared laughter and sadness… all these, I am sure, will be fondly remembered in the years ahead.  I hope the school motto, ‘Ora et Labora’ will forever be your guiding light when you ‘chase your dreams’.

Henry Ford wisely said, “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress and working together is success.” May God’s love and care be with you all wherever you go. Congratulations to all graduates. We are immensely proud of you and I hope that you are all equally proud of your identity as a Shungtakian.

Thank you and God bless,
Dr Cecilia Tang
Principal

Founders Day

28th November, 2022 marked the 64th anniversary of our school!
The Founders Day of this year was a great success and we thank all of you who had contributed!

In the morning, we had our ceremony where our School Supervisor Reverend Li Chi Yuen Simon, School Manager Sr. Michelle, Parent Manager Ms. Yip Wai Yin Angela, Chairperson of STC Parent Teacher Association Mr. Book Chun Yuen Ronald, the representative of STC Alumni Association Mr. Chung Ping Sang Henry, former Supervisor and Principal Mr. Malcolm Long and our Former Vice-Principal Mr. Choy Bing Ling were invited. All the guests and Shungtakians prayed for the school and also sang ‘Happy Birthday’ for the school together.

In order to celebrate this special event, two ice-cream trucks were arranged for all shungtakians. We would also like to take this opportunity to give special thanks to the Alumni Association and the Parent Teacher Association of Shung Tak for their kind sponsorship of the birthday cake and the ice-cream for students. This is surely one of the most unforgettable moments of the year!

Our Student-Teacher Fun Game was another highlight after the ceremony. We had 13 groups with more than a hundred participants! Two small games—a mix of musical chairs and scavenger hunt, and also water war—were held, and they were equally exciting! Everyone had a lot of fun during the activity. After all, 6P won the event and the second runner-up was 6M. In this event, Shungtakians and their teachers cherished this opportunity to have their memorable time together while enjoying the games. With the sound of photos snapping and students’ cheering, the celebration of The Founders day had marked an end.

STChallenge The Fun Way To Take On Challenges

The annual STChallenge was held in the beautiful morning of 26 November 2022.

The day saw Primary 6 students – working in small teams led by Shungtakian helpers – take on a series of exhilarating challenges. With different academic departments and clubs involved, the event has provided the young participants with a wider spectrum of experiences to help them get a taste of what learning is like in an EMI secondary school – particularly in a fun-packed one like Shung Tak!

Over 200 primary school students joined in the fun. We started with a few warm-up activities in the School Hall followed by a treasure hunt featuring all the different creative games designed by our teachers and students. Of course, there were lots of prizes too!

All our young visitors responded very positively except for one thing – the event was too short! They hoped to stay and play longer because the games were simply awesome!

Special thanks should go to all the teachers, our PTA helpers, the 200 and more student helpers, and all the others who have contributed to the event. We are excited to see how wonderful STChallenge 2023 will be.

STC Information Day 2022

After an exciting morning of STChallenge, our Information Day was held in the afternoon of 26 November 2022.

The event consisted of an admission talk, a guided campus tour, and mini stall games. During the admission talk, our Principal Dr Tang and Assistant Principal Mr Kwan introduced various aspects of the School, such as our Vision and Mission, outstanding HKDSE results, strong English environment, as well as diversified activities. 5L Agatha Wong and 4L Jason Lun also shared with our visitors their experience and growth as Shungtakians. The talk ended with a Q&A session which allowed parents and students to ask more specific follow-up questions.

Guided by our helpful and courteous School Ambassadors, visitors toured around our school campus, getting a better understanding about our school life. Not only could they see the many special rooms we have, they also got to play some subject-based games prepared by our student helpers and teachers.

We should also give a big shout-out to our PTA helpers who set up a counter to answer questions and share their experience with the parent visitors about helping their children adapt to secondary school life. Without doubt, they must have gained some good insights from our friendly parent helpers!

The Information Day would not have been such a tremendous success without the help of each and every person involved. Thank you all for the brilliant work! We should all be proud of this unshakable Shung Tak spirit!
