Wealth and Simplicity

Imagine you suddenly become a wealthy person with billions of assets and a luxurious yacht, what are you going to do? I bet many of you will squander it in certain ways, like going on a vacation, buying an extravagant villa in Mid-Levels and so on. Money can bring us more opportunities and choices, but it can also bring us catastrophes and adversities. To create a balance, simplicity is the elixir.

Simplicity doesn’t mean that we have to abandon the superior material life and become impoverished. Rather, simplicity indicates that we are not fettered to our fortune and are willing to share a portion of it to the needy.

Jesus once said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” The Bible recorded the whole life of Jesus, and we could know that his life was plain instead of luxurious, even when he was born, in which Jesus was just wrapped up in swaddling clothes and placed in a manger.

Simplicity is not recommended without reasons. Jesus once suggested that people should live in a simple spirit in a sermon. This kind of lifestyle is conducive to our approach to God. To live a plain life, we can do the following things: If you are rich, try to make good use of your wealth to help the people in need, remind yourself that money is a blessing from God and cherish it as much as you can. One the other hand, if you are someone with financial difficulties, remind yourself that money is not the priority of life. Instead, it’s justice and love. Thus, never give up morality for the sake of wealth.

Society nowadays is full of temptations of fame and money. We can easily live an affluent and lavish life. Jesus said, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” He reminds us to pursue spiritual wealth over material wealth so that we may understand the significance of simplicity and live a carefree life.
