We gain from responsibilities

Talking about taking responsibility, some people may feel that it is hard for them. They may think that “it is too hard for me; I can’t take that.” However, there are a lot of things in your life that you have to take responsibility for. You can’t escape from them. If you have never tried to take those responsibilities, how do you know you cannot take them? Would you want to leave them and pretend those responsibilities do not exist? I am sure that is not how a Shungtakian behaves.

I really love the hat analogy Mr. Manchester used before to describe responsibility. Throughout our lives, there are a lot of hats we need to wear. Being a student, we wear only one hat which is to behave well and work hard in studying. However, as we are growing up, we will have more and more hats to wear, and you may also wear a couple of hats at the same time. Like being a parent in a family, you have to take good care of your kids and their grandparents while shouldering responsibilities at the workplace.

Sounds hard, right? These hats are unique though, most of the time, you are the only one that fits these hats. At the end of the day, you may find yourself tired of wearing so many hats, but what you get from wearing these hats is worthwhile. If you work hard in your studies, you will get good results and your parents will be proud of you. If you wear the hat of a parent well, they will give back to you when they are grown-ups. You may find happiness from these results. Thus, it is always worth it for you to wear different hats.

Martin Luther King Jr, a man who boldly wore the hats for millions of black lives, once said that “The time is always right to do what is right.” The man wore such a heavy hat of being the leader in racial equality movements, that he even died for it. People still remember the famous “I have a dream” speech and admire him to this very day because he took responsibility, and he wore the hat well. Thus, it is never late to be responsible, do not hesitate and wear your hat. You will gain a lot from it, trust me.
