Good morning, we are Campus TV. Sometimes it feels like a challenge to protect the world. With the damage we have caused, it seems like the work that we need to do would never end. Some may say it is impossible to make a big change to our environment, but we have to try to achieve remarkable results. Today, we would like to share a story with you about a man who was determined to make an impact on the world with his invention.
When we receive packages, a portion of happiness always comes from popping the plastic wrap, from the feeling of satisfaction to the sound it makes.
The original plastic bubble wrap is a cheap, simple and easy way to pack delivery packages.
However, a person named Tom Corrigan, an inventor for a multinational conglomerate company, 3M, didn’t see it the same way.
He knew that the growing demand for delivery has been causing the need for this type of packaging to rise.
Knowing that plastic waste is a big part of the Earth’s pollution, he started to work on discovering a new sustainable solution to replace plastic bubble wrap.
On one random day, he encountered a shop that sells traditional Japanese origami, this inspired him. He realised that paper can be folded into different interesting shapes and strong structures.
With the target of cherishing resources, he then decided to use recycled paper.
After months and years of working on the design, Tom finally finished his design of a perfect solution– the Scotch Cushion Lock.
By working with technology, the Scotch Cushion Lock is a groundbreaking fusion of mechanical engineering and recycling.
Using completely recycled materials, the Cushion Lock is able to expand up to 60 times the size of what it looks like and even interlocks with itself to create a nest protecting the package.
While it is only made from recycled paper, the special kirigami design allows it to fold up to structures that are completely vertical, forming a stronger structure to hold different objects.
From Tom’s story, we can see that with enough determination and the effective usage of our creations, any one of us can truly make a difference.
His spirit of trying to cherish and protect our earth also inspires us to treasure everything created by God, especially the environment which we have always been harming.
Using different materials for packaging may seem to be a futile effort on our part, but with enough plastic bubble wrap being replaced by these paper creations, Tom’s work can truly make a difference.
Even if we cannot make such an impactful change, we can still try our best to be environmentally friendly in our daily lives.
With enough effort from each and every one of us, we can change the world.
