To what extent do you fulfill your responsibility?

The theme of this month is taking responsibility. To me, it’s not just a matter of responsibility. It’s the result that we achieve with our responsibility. To be more specific, to what extent do you fulfill your responsibility? Mediocre, average, or outstanding?

I will take students as an example. You have the responsibility of learning and submitting assignments on time, but it won’t be helpful if you don’t shoulder that responsibility and procrastinate. That makes you a mediocre student.

If you hand in everything on time and you finish your work whole-heartedly, you are an average student.

How to be an outstanding student? If your teacher offers extra learning materials, do them! Even if your score in that subject is 99%, you can still improve your score and understand the topic better. If you’re having difficulties raising a low score, ask your teacher or peers if there’s anything you can do to learn more efficiently. They’ll be impressed by your dedication!

At this point, rather than homework, you may already be thinking about where to have lunch. If a restaurant owner offers unhygienic food to you, he or she is irresponsible. It would be a responsible act if they can provide reasonably tasty food that is safe to eat. An outstanding restaurant owner will be able to provide an excellent dining experience to diners. However, it is not simply about enjoying scrumptious food coupled with fantastic service in a relaxing ambience. Instead, sharing the joy of eating or the warmth of human connection is something that an outstanding restaurant owner can do. In other words, they fulfill their corporate social responsibility.

I’m sure you are familiar with Sham Shui Po “Ming Gor,” who has offered meals to the poor in the district for nearly 10 years for free.

In 2008, he started collaborating with the Society for Community Organization to offer meal vouchers at an affordable price to the underprivileged. With the help of volunteers, he gives out free meals to the homeless, the elderly, and ethnic minorities on a weekly basis.

Gradually, news about his philanthropy spread through the city and he became a household name for his benevolence. In 2014, he also set up a social enterprise to organize food giveaways.

He completely understands his role, ability, and at the same time, societal needs. He appreciates the bigger picture that he turns a good experience into a great one. He is taking responsibility, in an outstanding and selfless way.

In conclusion, responsibility is not about the tasks you are given, but the standard to which you deliver them.
