The Kite Runner

Good morning, we are The Library Club. The theme of this month is active listening and empathy. In relation to this theme, we would like to share a book with you—The Kite Runner.  It’s a story about kites and two young men from Afghanistan. The book talks about a rich young man and his servant, and it explores how people can betray each other and find a way to make things right again.

The main character, Amir, in the book is rich but not happy because of his father. Other people see his father as almost perfect. He cares about the community, helps others, and is seen as honest, brave, and highly respected. But when Amir was a child, he wanted to be close to his father but felt unsure about it. His father had big hopes for Amir, but he couldn’t meet them by being honest and brave. Amir was weak and not good at things, and he stayed in his own little world.

Amir asked his father if he could sit next to him, but his father blocked him and said no. His father told him to leave and said it was time for adults. He even told Amir to go back and read his own books. Throughout the year, Amir’s father always looked serious, but he showed a rare smile when Amir won the kite competition. Because his father didn’t give him much attention or praise, Amir desperately wanted his father to notice him. He was ready to do things that went against his own beliefs, like telling lies and hiding the bad things he did because he was scared.

A child who was once talented and could have grown up happily may have lost their way due to a lack of patient listening and care. It’s unfortunate because this highlights the significance of listening and caring. this story also reminds us to practice empathy in our daily lives, to consider things from others’ perspectives, and to show compassion. A companion is someone with whom we can share our deepest thoughts and feelings, and this holds true for any close relationship. When we are loved and supported by someone, we gain the courage to face life’s challenges without fear.
