The Feast Day of St. Joseph

Yesterday, March 19, was the Feast Day of St. Joseph, husband of Mother Mary and father of our Lord, Jesus Christ. But before I talk a bit more about St. Joseph, I’d like to share a story about a person who was also a father-like figure in my life.

When I was in secondary school, I did not always get the best grades and sometimes I would feel down because of this. One of those subjects which I was poor in was Mathematics. Fortunately for me, my Maths teacher was always there to help me. Whenever I had difficulties and needed advice, he was there to pick me up. But perhaps what made me admire him the most was that he too, experienced many challenges in life. Despite facing many difficulties, he was able to pick himself up and those around him as well.

In our lives, we are going to face periods where we will face serious challenges. But like St. Joseph, if we trust the Lord, we can overcome those challenges. When Mother Mary was pregnant with Jesus, Joseph was afraid and wanted to leave Mary. However, an angel came to Joseph in a dream and told him, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins,” he did as the angel told him and took Mary as his wife. (Matthew 1:19-25).

Shungtakians, I hope when you face challenges in your lives, you will be able to trust the Lord, just like St. Joseph, and also help those around you when they need you the most.
