The Elderly in our daily lives

Before I start my sharing, let’s watch a short video by Sister Wan 溫嘉麗修女 in November 2020. (Please click here and open a new tab to watch the video)

In respond to the video, the group of weak people in Hong Kong I would like to share today is the elderly. Although it is not the year 2020 and maybe face masks are not what they need the most, let’s think about what are their urgent needs and what we can do, help, and show our care on them. From the contents near the end of the video, we should reflect on Jesus’ teaching on “Caring for the Weak”. And try to take actions to help those in need, especially the elderly in our daily lives.

In 2020, there are 1,397,600 people aged 65 or above and their poverty rate is 45%, which the figures are the highest among recent 10 years, this shows that the problem of population ageing in Hong Kong is very serious and getting worse. Among the elderly, 13% of them lived alone by themselves, which we called “Solitary Elderly” (獨居長者) and some of them even become “Hidden Elderly” (隱蔽長者).

Students, let us think about what we can do to help the elderly. It is a good idea to start care more about the elderly of our family first (for example, our Grandparents), and then move forward to the elderly of our society. Maybe what we can help first is to think of what they need every day, as simple as helping or teaching them to do the RAT rapid test, accompany them for taking different doses of vaccine, make sure that they are fine to handle their electronic devices with LeaveHomeSafe App and Vaccination Record Card for their outings, to mention but a few and there are actually a lot more that we can do. In conclusion, try to pay more time and attention to be with them to show your love and care and they can feel the happiness and joy you give them.
