Today I would like to talk about miracles. A miracle is an unusual and mysterious event that is thought to have been caused by a god because it does not follow the usual laws of nature. Have you ever encountered one of those miracles? I wasn’t talking about miracles like: you got sick and prayed to God last night, and you are perfectly fine today….or you didn’t do the revision but you still managed to pass the exam. These so-called Miracles take away our pain or make us feel better so we call it miracles. However, the following story may change of how you see miracles.
This is a stroy about a miracle that happened to a princess 800 years ago. At the age of 14, She lost her parents and became a Hugarian princess. Even though she was living a royal life, she did not lose herself in wealth and high social status. Instead, she was driven by a need to serve the poor. She wore simple clothing and used her status as a royal and political power to benefit those most vulnerable. Daily, she would take bread to poor people in her land, insisting that no one go hungry.
One of the most famous miracles that happened to her was that one time she stole a loaf of bread from the castle and carried it to the city so that she could offer the food to the poor people. She got caught on her way out and when she was asked by the security guard to show what was in the basket, the loaves of bread miraculously changed into roses. This miracle spread around the world and now people always depict her in art as a woman holding a basket of bread demonstrating her devotion to the poor and hungry. I am talking about a catholic saint St Elizabeth of Hungary.
Today is the feast day of St Elizabeth of Hungary. And when I was reading her story, one question popped up. “Why did God turn it into roses? Why not just make it disappear, or make the security guard blind, or why not this or that? Why it has to be roses?”
I think it is because her act of giving bread to poor people was as beautiful as roses. This means when she gives people bread, she is giving out roses. This miracle tells us a simple message that an act of love and kindness could be beautiful and glorifying God. So no matter if you are just washing dishes for your family, motivating classmates who failed the exam, forgiving someone who hurt you because of their weakness, or simply putting a smile on your face, maybe in God’s eyes, these are the roses that you are giving to your neighbors!
Instead of sitting there waiting for miracles that can make our life easier, perhaps starting today, we can try to give roses to others in small things so that when we are in heaven we can see a garden full of flowers!
