Good morning teachers and Shungtakians,
Today, I want to share two key values of our Catholic faith and community: Simplicity and Sharing.
In our busy world, things can get complicated easily. But true strength comes from being simple. Simplicity isn’t about having nothing. It’s about choosing what is truly necessary and focusing on what matters most: our friends and family, our faith, our good character, and our well-being.
In October, Ms. Lam reminded us of St. Francis of Assisi. He chose a simple life. He found great joy, not through owning things, but by loving God’s creation and helping others. When we simplify our lives, it becomes easier to share.
Sharing is more than just giving away things. It’s an act of caring for each other, recognizing that we are one big family.
We can share through donations, but also through small acts of kindness:
- Share Your Time: Spend a few minutes tutoring a classmate, or volunteer to help in our community, like the efforts we see around the city today.
- Share Your Heart: Forgive someone, truly listen to a friend, or make sure everyone feels welcome here at school.
Simple living leads to generosity, and generosity makes our community stronger, showing the selfless love of Christ.
Today is Constitution Day (4th December). This day reminds us of our commitment to our home, Hong Kong. The character traits of Shungtakians — kindness, compassion, discernment, responsibility, servant leadership and gratitude — are the simple ideas that guide our daily lives.
In the same way, the rules that protect our rights and freedoms are built on one strong foundation: the Constitution of our Nation.
The Constitution is the starting point for the Basic Law. It sets clear rules for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). We must understand that our local system cannot exist without the nation’s main laws. This is the basis of “one country, two systems.”
Our duty as citizens is about sharing this foundation in three simple ways:
- Share the Knowledge: Don’t just keep the Constitution and Basic Law in textbooks. We share and understand how these documents work for Hong Kong.
- Share the Opportunity: Hong Kong is a city of huge opportunities. We must uphold this law to keep these chances alive.
- Share the Responsibility: We must share the job of protecting this constitutional order to show a strong sense of national identity and civic duty.
Constitution Day is our yearly reminder that our nation is built on the rule of law. Our legal duties and our moral duty—to act with justice, kindness, and service, following God’s law as well as human laws.
Let us embrace the simple strength of our legal foundation and share the knowledge and responsibility that will guarantee a stable and successful future for Hong Kong.
