How do you define the word ‘respect’? We believe that respect is a way of treating or thinking about something or someone. We show respect by being polite and kind. Today, we would like to share a story about respect and we hope you will be inspired by it.
Once upon a time, a legless man crawled to a popular gym awkwardly. The gym-goers next to him covered their eyes, showing a look of disgust.
The legless man crawled slowly towards the gym equipment and he said softly, ‘I am here to workout.’ The fitness trainer came over, introducing the equipment enthusiastically and said, ‘Thank you for coming here. Hope you’ll have a pleasant experience here.’
The legless man crawled in. He felt flattered as he had never been so honored, ‘Sir, thank you very much for your kindness.’
The fitness trainer’s daughter felt puzzled and asked, ‘Dad, why are you so kind to this man and allow him to stay? Don’t you know that he can’t use any of the equipment here?’
The fitness trainer explained, ‘Although he is disabled, he has the right to use the equipment here, like others. He spent a long time crawling alone just to get here. How can I ask him to leave? I can’t do it or shouldn’t treat him rudely.’
The daughter was still confused and she said, ‘It seems that other gym-goers feel uncomfortable with his presence. I’m afraid our reputation will turn bad if we allow this man to stay here.’
The fitness trainer replied patiently, ‘Each individual is unique and has his or her values. We should accept somebody for who they are, even when they’re different from you or you don’t agree with them.’
The daughter felt ashamed of what she said and she reflected on what to do so that people in the society will know more about respect.
Respect is not only kindness and politeness, but also care and understanding. Such respect is not limited to races, gender or social status. Respect is a kind of courage and it is also a kind of wisdom! Learn to show respect not only to people whom you know well, but also to everyone in the world.
