Today, we would like to share with you all a story about us, and how we understood the meaning of “showing understanding”. Since September last year, our class has been very active in joining different activities and inter-class competitions. We have always been trying to do our best in order to win the competitions. However, things don’t always go as we wish.
When there is an inter-class competition, we would have to choose some class representatives, right? In our class, some of our classmates are very shy to join the competitions, though they may be very good at that subject. As we always want to win the competitions, we have tried pushing or even forcing some students to join the activities so that we will have a higher chance of winning. We have even argued when it comes to choosing who to join the competitions. This did not turn out well and in the end, the competition did not become a very pleasant experience for our representatives and for the whole class. Perhaps we could do really well in the activity, but it had greatly affected our friendship.
Because of that experience, we have learnt that we should respect and understand the differences between our peers. Some of our classmates may prefer to be the mastermind below the stage, while some other classmates enjoy performing or speaking more. What we should have done is to understand each other’s talents and feelings, and cooperate with each other, instead of ignoring our friend’s feelings and forcing them. The most important thing is not to win the competitions, but to work together as a class.
Since then, we have tried to involve classmates with different talents in the preparation process before the competitions. Even though they may not be the one who represents our class to be on the stage, they could still participate in it in a way that they feel comfortable. By using this approach, we have exchanged more ideas and learned more from each other. Our friendship was strengthened while preparing for the competitions too.
