Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) charging scheme

Good morning, Today I’m going to talk about the Municipal Solid Waste.

According to the data from the EPD, in 2021, there were 11,358 tonnes Municipal Solid Waste produced per day, that is more than 1 .5 kg/person/day. If your body mass is 45kg, just one month you will produce waste as heavy as one of you. It is unaffordable for HK to deal with these enormous amount of municipal solid waste since all the three landfill sites in HK now is almost full.

In fact, we are doing a lot in our school to reduce waste production, for example we have routine paper, plastic bottle recycling scheme, food residue collection scheme and also occasional collection activities such as mooncake box collection and red-packets collection competition, etc., But can we do more to help?

Last week, all classes should have received an information sheet about an inter-class competition of preparing a video to promote ‘bring your own eating utensil’ when buying food in our tuck shop. If we can reduce the usage of the disposable food boxes, spoons and forks, we can effectively reduce the production of municipal solid waste.

Furthermore, as the implementation of the Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) charging scheme on 1 April 2024, bring your own eating utensils can also reduce the expenses of our school on paying the wastes produced.

I think you are now busying in making the video. Remember all classes from S1 to 5 must submit one video, and S6 classes are encouraged to join. The deadline of submission is 20th of December, that is next Wednesday.

I hope you did listen to me actively and will protect our vulnerable Earth with empathy.
