I’m sure we all have come across countless group projects, and there will always be two distinct ideas being against each other as long as there’s more than one person. Besides, there will always be someone that you don’t wish to be in the same group in your many experiences. What would you do if this happens to you? To take a deeper look, here is a simple example to show you why you should show others the theme of this month: acceptance and inclusiveness.
Judy, a little rabbit, has always dreamt of being a police officer in the movie called Zootopia. However, despite her outstanding performance in the academy, the Chief fails to recognize her talent because of her being a rabbit that looks weak and assigns her to a puny parking duty. Nevertheless, she still has the strong eagerness to contribute to the society, which she did by solving an important case using her extraordinary ability of observation and being brave.
You may not notice, but this is actually how showing acceptance and inclusiveness would be like. When accepting things or others, we are not agreeing with others or believing what they believe in, but accepting that there are differences and it is perfectly fine to have differences, which is crucial to our society because if the Chief in the movie held a proper attitude when assigning the duties without taking the initiative to prejudice about what he thought a good police officer should be, which are the predator animals, and have a higher expectation on Judy, who was extremely talented that was even able to solve huge crimes, Judy would have contributed more to the society, and more different talents of prey animals like Judy would have had the opportunity to make good use of their particular abilities.
It would not be a diversity if everyone kept dwelling on the supremacy of their own beliefs, it is essential to have a vibrant diversity of differences so that not only more different opinions and new ideas, but also more talents in more aspects can be embraced, it will then become a way better society which more voices can be heard and valued.
Hence, dear Shungtakians, next time when you encounter something that does not fit what you expect, when one of your enemies is in your group, and you are thinking you may give up on the whole project all because of him or her, why not wish him or her to be in your group so that more points of views might possibly be raised? By always bringing the two words, ‘acceptance’ and ‘inclusiveness’ to your mind, I hope you may get a surprising result that you haven’t expected!
