Morning Prayer on 1st September 2024

Good morning teachers and Shungtakians.

Welcome back. I hope all of you are refreshed, recharged and energized after the holiday.

I’m so excited to see all of your smiling faces, both familiar and new, as we embark on another year of learning and growth together.

On the first day of a new school term, I also want to welcome teachers and students who are new to Shung Tak. May God bless you with a smooth transition in the new school environment. For those who are at a new level, let’s pray for strength and wisdom in the new venture.

The theme for September’s morning prayer is “Cherish oneself and Strive for Goodness”. Cherishing oneself is essential for personal growth and well-being. To cherish ourselves means recognising our worth, practising self-care and maintaining good physical and psychological health. It is with a positive self-image that we can act with kindness, integrity, and compassion. All these contribute to a fulfilling life and positive interpersonal relationships.

Though the Olympics ended on 11 August, I am sure all of you have been inspired by the recent successes of the Olympic athletes, especially China’s and the HKSAR’s representatives. Their achievements remind us of the power of dedication, perseverance, and teamwork. Despite intense challenges and fierce competition, they remained focused and determined. Their hard work and commitment brought them incredible victories, showing us that with effort and resilience, we can achieve great things.

Among all, I want to highlight Siobhan Haughey, one of Hong Kong’s star Olympic medalists. Siobhan was born in Hong Kong and attended a local school in her primary and secondary education. From crying every time when she jumped in the pool in her childhood to perceiving swimming as an opportunity to meet and engage with her friends, Siobhan has no regret pursuing her passion. The half-Irish athlete has been actively pursued by Ireland to represent the country. However, she stayed loyal to her roots and proudly represented the place she was born and raised in. Siobhan loves Hong Kong and her commitment to swimming and Hong Kong community makes her a role model for all of us.

Let’s take the examples of Olympics athletes to heart. Whether it’s in the classroom, on the sports field, or in any personal pursuit, remember that success comes from setting goals, working hard, and supporting each other. Let’s embrace the opportunities ahead with enthusiasm and courage. Together, we can make this year one of growth and achievement.

Thank you and God bless.
