Make good use of our own strengths

Acceptance and inclusiveness are very important as we can build good interpersonal relationships based on them. Today, let us share with you all a story about acceptance and inclusiveness.

Once upon a time, there were different types of rabbits. Some rabbits had fat ears, some of them had long ears, some of them had square-shaped ears, and some of them had curved and wavy shaped ears. Besides these rabbits, there was a rabbit without ears. The rabbit without ears could jump as high as others, the hole it dug would not be shallower than the holes that others dug. It could finish a mountain of carrots in a few minutes and it was good at playing hide-and-seek. Yet, none of the rabbits wanted to play with it, as they thought a normal rabbit should have a pair of ears, even foxes were not interested in it as they only liked to chase rabbits with ears. The rabbit without ears was usually very lonely.

One day, the rabbit without ears found an egg. It posted notices everywhere telling others about an egg being found and hoped its owner could take it back. Many rabbits made fun of it and considered its action silly. The rabbit without ears felt disappointed and thought the rabbits were mean. It waited for the owner to take the egg, yet no one came. As a result, the rabbit decided to send the egg to the lost-and-found office, but no one was interested. A man who sat behind the counter smiled and said to the rabbit without ears maliciously, ‘Hey, rabbit without ears, don’t wait here. If someone wants the egg, I will contact you immediately.’ ‘The man is mean!’ The rabbit thought, and it could only bring the egg back home.

The rabbit without ears checked on the Internet, and it found that animals hatched from the eggs and usually had very small ears, which looked like they had no ears. It thought: ‘Great! These animals that hatch from eggs won’t laugh at me for sure!’ From that day on, the rabbit without ears stayed with the egg always. The rabbit read its favorite book to the egg, taught the egg to swim, and took the egg to see the most stylish art. In the evening, it even watched scary movies with the egg, then fell asleep next to the egg.

The earless rabbit loved the egg very much. It was worried that the egg would catch cold, so it designed and wove a little hat for the egg. In order to let the egg breathe fresh air, it took the egg to climb the mountain.

The egg baby grew up day by day, and it got heavier. One day, the egg cracked and the rabbit screamed. At that moment, a chick stood in front of him, looking at the earless rabbit curiously. The rabbit without ears was very disappointed. “Ah! Why do you have two ears?” The newborn chick replied softly, “Chick! Chick!” The chicken gently hugged the earless rabbit. The rabbit with no ears and the chicken with two ears became good friends.

From that day on, the earless rabbit felt that it was not important at all whether it had ears or not. Nevertheless, the chicken’s ears could be a big deal when it was playing peek-a-boo! From the story, the chicken with two ears and the earless rabbit might be unique from their peers, yet they accepted their differences from others and treated others as they did to themselves. Shungtakians, remember that we should learn from the story of the chicken with two ears and the earless rabbit. We should not feel ashamed of our weaknesses or things that were not as good as others. We should appreciate our own strengths or good qualities and make good use of them, then develop them further, gradually we will become confident of ourselves. Also, we should treat others fairly and put aside prejudice.
