Love – Sense of belonging

Today, I would like to talk about something related to love, which is the ‘sense of belonging’. Do you have a strong feeling that you are a part of your family, your class, your school, your city and your country? Or, would you say that you are just yourself?

Let’s take the sense of belonging to the school as an example. We do not really need to tell everyone that we are members of Shung Tak, but if we really feel that we are part of it, or really love it, we would naturally have different feelings whenever something happens to it or in it, or even when nothing special happens.

The sense of belonging can be seen from your daily actions. Last Friday, we experienced the club orientation day which was organized by our student leaders. They worked really hard in planning activities for the year, decorating the board and producing Souvenir. Although some clubs could not recruit their targeted number of members, I was extremely happy to hear from some of them that they absolutely enjoyed the time working together. I am sure that their sense of belonging to the school and to their teams have been enhanced. This year, I also observed that much less rubbish was left on the ground than previous years. Thanks to all leaders who love the school as if they love their family. This is an example of showing their sense of belonging to the school naturally.

Some of you may ask: Why do we need to have a sense of belonging? Does it benefit me at all? Last year, I heard from a student that he would like the school to cancel the inter-class singing contest and whatever activities that require him to spend time with the class preparing, as it is a waste of his personal time. I agree that preparing for competitions requires time, but at the same time, I strongly believe that all these moments bring us memories. Do you want more time to be with your classmates, or do you simply look forward to a spring break like last year.

My final message is that all of us should not just regard ourselves as individuals, but we should try to care and love more about the groups and communities that we belong to. With a sense of belonging, our life must be more fruitful and wonderful.
