It is inhumane to treat animals like toys

Agatha, Abby: Good morning, we are the volunteer team.

Abby: Hey Agatha, have you heard about the Hong Kong government proposing heavier penalties for animal abuse and introducing a duty of care on people responsible for animals?

Abby: As they should. I’ve always wondered how people can be so cruel to those animals. It’s just unfair to them. They are smaller in size so it’s impossible for them to fight back, not to mention their inability to speak up for their rights. Also, it is inhumane to treat them like toys. If they are tired of their pets, they can just simply get rid of them.

Agatha: Exactly. So that’s why we, humans, need to speak up for them. We should care for the weak animals to make sure they are well- treated. Today, we are going to introduce two organizations to you, one local, one worldwide.

Abby: Paws Hero is a non- profit organization which emphasizes the importance of showing kindness to animals and to eliminate animal cruelty / as they believe animals and humans are the heroes for each other. They initiated the Public Education Programme- an interactive storytelling programme / targeted to kindergarten students, / teaching them on how to treat animals nicely. Moreover, the Education Hub provides a space for different charities and animal shelters to collaborate / and educate the public to treat animals with respect. Don’t forget to volunteer if you are interested!

Agatha: I’ve heard of this organization before and I especially like the quote that they say, ‘Respect life, minimize cruelty.’ Now, talking about the other organization, the Gorilla Doctors.

Abby: Gorilla Doctors? I’ve never heard of it.

Agatha: Then let me introduce to you. Gorilla Doctors is the only organization in the world dedicated to saving the mountain and eastern lowland gorilla species. Their objective is to offer better medical treatment to them and enhance their health.

Abby: Wow, that’s amazing. What is their work?

Agatha: Gorilla Doctors will operate in all three countries where the gorillas live, including Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. They will monitor Gorilla’s health in several national parks. Meanwhile, they offer close cooperation with African schools and universities, and by supporting its staff in professional continuing education.

Abby: The achievements of these Doctors are very admirable. I’m amazed by their passion even though it’s challenging to take care of the Gorillas. Maybe we can try to donate money to these organizations. With our little contribution, together, we can build a better society!

Agatha: What a good idea. Let’s do it!

Amy: In our daily life, we always hope to offer the needy help. However, animals also have the right to live better. So, if you would like to care for the weak, it is also a good idea to help animals, especially a number of animal species that have suffered due to global climate change. To enhance their living environment, all of us have the ability and power to do so. Starting from a simple donation can help a lot.

Aspen: Now, let us pray for a better living environment for animals.
