You know, last week, when I was doing the new year countdown at church, I was given a piece of paper to write down “What things you are feeling thankful for in 2021?” As I was looking back at 2021, a lot of things have happened to me. Some of our friends have left and moved somewhere else, many things have changed, and covid-19 is still on-going. With such a tough year to live through and I couldn’t really think of something to be thankful for.
As my friends are writing something and I’m still siting here with a blank piece of paper. I said to myself: “There must be something to be thankful for, right?” Then I went back to basics. For example, I made it through 2021…My friends and family are healthy and safe…I got a meaningful job…students were nice to me….I got to play basketball with my friends again….I got to attend mass again.
As I read what I wrote, I realized that some of these things were actually what I had hoped for last January. But I guess I had forgotten them because I didn’t really look back when I had achieved what I had hoped for. I recommend you to do the same after the exam!
Now, you are probably very nervous about the upcoming exams, so I hope this line from the Prince of Egypt could help you a bit. There’s a scene in the movie where the slaves in Egypt are feeling hopeless about leaving Egypt. And Moses told the: “Pharaoh, the emperor of Egypt, can take away your food, your home and your very own lives with one word. But there’s one thing that they could never take away from you, it’s your faith.” It is very true that most of the things that we have been working hard for could be taken away so easily in this world. Just one tiny virus or misfortune can severely affect our life plan. However, faith will always be in our heart like a seed of hope. And even if you get a bad grade or if you were not as good as the others for this exam, always remember that God is listening to your prayer and He has faith in every one of us. Your hope may not be fulfilled as you expected, but the tree will eventually grow when you have faith in Him.
So instead of wishing you all a happy new year, I hope that God will bless you in the exams and stay with you in this very challenging world.
