I am not sure how many of you remember what I shared with you last time. The sharing was at the beginning of September and was about reacting positively when facing challenges, so that we can learn from failure and improve ourselves to become a better version.
It’s now the beginning of Term 2. Have you become a “better you” compared to Term 1? You should have received most or all of your exam papers by now. Have you made any improvements academically?
Also, have you participated in any extra-curricular activities to learn and develop different skills? Have you made any contributions and served others?
I could raise 100 more “have you…” questions for you to consider regarding whether you have been doing well or making improvements in various aspects, which might annoy you and lead you to think that your parents and teachers have too high expectations and have given you too many tasks to accomplish.
As stated in one of the prayers in our Laudamus: It’s never easy to be a student, and it seems that the hard work will never end. But remember, every right comes with its responsibilities. You are being raised by your parents, have the opportunity to receive an education in a Band 1 school, and are living a peaceful life in a well-developed city, which implies corresponding responsibilities. You should also consider the different responsibilities you can fulfill according to the various roles you play.
- As a person, are you able to recognize your own weaknesses and strive to improve yourself?
- As a son / daughter, do you understand your parents’ expectations well and maintain good communication with them?
- As a brother / sister, are you being reliable to your siblings and being there when they need you?
- As a student, do you actively take on various posts within the school and strive to complete the assigned tasks?
- As a friend, are you being supportive and encouraging your friends to do the right things?
- As a member of society, do you value civic responsibility, care about your community, and participate in community service?
- As a citizen of the global village, do you appropriately utilize the resources provided, avoid wastefulness, and contribute to environmental protection?
You are not required to fulfill these responsibilities “perfectly,” as everyone has different abilities and talents, and it’s unrealistic to expect everyone to act the same. You just need to think about how to improve yourself by considering how you can better fulfill your various responsibilities day by day, according to your different roles and identities. Hopefully, you will become a much better version of yourself.
