Imagine walking down the corridor outside your classroom and you see a classmate trip and fall, do you rush over to help, or do you turn away, hoping someone else will step in? Now, let’s think about the online world. Imagine yourself in a group chat with friends, where someone shares a funny picture with hurtful comments about a student. In that situation, do you join in the laughter, or do you take a stand to defend the person being targeted?
These moments may seem small, but they raise an important question: How do we choose to act as stewards of kindness in our daily lives? Let me repeat, ‘How do we choose to act as stewards of kindness in our daily lives’?
As we explore this month’s theme— ‘As God’s stewards, be kind to all living beings’— let’s reflect on our responsibilities to the people around us and the world we share. In the Book of Genesis, we learn that God has given us control over the earth. But what does that really mean? It’s not a license to take whatever we want or exploit the world without thought. Instead, it’s a sacred responsibility to care for all living things—whether humans, animals, or plants. Every being has its own value and purpose, and countless lives around us need our attention and care. Stewardship goes beyond just protecting nature; it also includes how we treat one another.
In today’s digital age, we see this responsibility challenged in troubling ways. Social media allows us to connect and share our thoughts, but it has also led to harmful behaviors like cyberbullying. Some feel bold enough to hide behind their screens, posting hurtful comments, spreading rumors, and attacking others without remorse. This behavior not only harms the victims by damaging their self-esteem and mental health but also weakens our sense of kindness by creating an atmosphere of fear and mistrust.
Now, let’s consider real-life situations. When we see someone fall on the playground or struggle with their belongings, do we choose to walk away, pretending not to notice, or do we rush to help? When we witness someone in trouble, do we turn a blind eye, tease them, or do our best to assist? As stewards, it is our duty to respond with kindness and compassion. We should offer help, call for assistance, or simply be there to support someone in need.
As we interact with one another—both online and offline—let’s remember our responsibility to care for each other. Let’s challenge ourselves to stand against bullying, to help those in need, and to create an environment where everyone can thrive. Only then we can truly honor the stewardship that God has entrusted to us.
At the same time, we must also recognize the importance of kindness towards ourselves. When we learn to love and respect ourselves, we become better equipped to show love and respect to others.
Let us commit to being stewards of kindness—towards ourselves, one another, and all living beings. Even the smallest act of kindness can have a profound impact on someone’s life. Together, we can create a more compassionate world. Let us seek God’s guidance to grant us the strength and wisdom to be true stewards of kindness in our daily lives.
