Be a “better you”

Good morning to you all. I am happy to share with you on this special day: it’s Day 1 of the first cycle, and I hope all of you are ready to attend classes. Let’s start our morning sharing with a question. What kind of person do you think you are?

In our last round of major concerns, we emphasized enabling students to become reflective learners. I believe all of you have built up the habit and are able to reflect on yourself, gaining a better understanding of who you are or what kind of person you want to be. Are you a good person? If you are required to use six adjectives to describe yourself, what would your choices of words be? Let’s have 10 seconds to think about this now.

(10 secs) OK, time’s up. Have you thought of anything good about yourself? Out of the six words you have chosen, how many of them are positive ones? Or do you have too negative perspectives on yourself?

Sometimes we will face challenges and obstacles, making life difficult, or we will encounter failure. But students, don’t lose confidence. Remember, there are people around you who love and support you. Just have faith and know that you can learn from failure, and hence improve yourself.

“You can’t control the wind, but you can adjust your sails.” I’m sure many of you are familiar with this saying. We can’t control the events happening around us, but we can control how we react to them.

Having a growth mindset and staying positive is important. Remember, everyone has their own character strengths. Try to explore and cherish your own talents, then have the courage to venture into the unknown to reveal your own light.

Students will prepare their self-accounts by the end of their secondary school life to introduce themselves to universities. It’s also a good chance for you to reflect on yourself. Have you become a better person after the years you spent at Shung Tak? Will you be able to use some positive words to describe yourself, supported by concrete evidence from your experiences and achievements?  Junior form students, what can you do now so that the above is possible to happen?

It’s now the beginning of a school year, which is a good time for you to set appropriate goals, not only in academics but also in your whole-person development. Be positive and seize every opportunity to participate, to learn, and to contribute in different activities. Always try to cherish yourself, appreciate your own talents and make good use of them.

The School is starting a new 3-year cycle of major concerns, with a focus on cultivating your positive values and attitudes. I hope that through the school-based values education curriculum, along with various learning activities inside and outside the classrooms, with active participation, every Shungtakian will be become a better person who is kind, compassionate, discerning, responsible, willing to serve others, and grateful.

Looking forward to seeing a “better you” in the coming future!!
