A Study Tour Like No Other: Adventures Across the UK

5J Harvey Wong

My two weeks in the UK at Chinese New Year 2025 with schoolmates was an unforgettable adventure, packed with surprises, laughter, and cherished moments. From navigating British culture to exploring historic landmarks, every day felt like a page from a travel diary.

The highlight was our integration program at St Augustine’s Catholic High School in Redditch. The warm welcome from students and teachers made us feel right at home. Experiencing their interactive lessons contrasted with our more structured approach in Hong Kong, prompting me to reflect on how culture shapes education. I’ve even kept in touch with some students on Snapchat!

As a Harry Potter fan, visiting the Warner Bros Studio was a dream come true. Walking through iconic sets was surreal, and trying Butterbeer was an experience in itself!

Every location we visited, from Cambridge to the British Museum, enriched our journey. This trip was more than just a tour; it was a collection of unforgettable moments.

A Memorable Cultural and Educational Journey to Beijing

This year, our students had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Beijing Exchange Programme with Beijing National Day School Jinyuan during our Easter break. The exchange kicked off with a warm welcome and a flag-raising ceremony, fostering a friendly atmosphere. Throughout the visit, students engaged in icebreaking activities, collaborative projects, and class observations, gaining valuable insights into diverse learning styles and school cultures.

Friendly badminton matches further strengthened the bonds between our schools. Highlights included attending an ‘Ethics and Law’ class and hosting a Q&A session about Hong Kong’s education system, which encouraged meaningful cultural exchange. Outside the classroom, students explored iconic landmarks like the Great Wall and the Forbidden City, enriching their understanding of Beijing’s rich history. This exchange aims to establish a long-term partnership, promoting mutual growth and development for our school and for Jinyuan. We look forward to more enriching experiences in the future!

Huizhou, Shenzhen: History, Culture, and Sustainable Development Study Tour

5J Li Kai-chiu

The three-day Citizenship and Social Development study tour to Huizhou in early March 2025 was a profound exploration of history, revealing the enduring essence of Chinese civilization. From the serene Dongpo Ancestral Hall to the bustling West Lake and the impressive Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant, I experienced a unique blend of tradition and modernity that prompted deep reflection on identity and responsibility.

Visiting the Dongpo Shrine, I felt the open-minded spirit of Su Shi, realizing the resilience of Chinese culture. The contrast between the ancient banyan tree and modern skyscrapers illustrated the dynamic interplay of history and progress. The geological museum showcased millions of years of history, emphasizing that our country’s development in the areas of science and technology.

Interacting with local junior high students at a school in Pingshan highlighted the connection between tradition and innovation. Their passion for cultural heritage and friendship warmed my heart, demonstrating the openness of our generation. This journey deepened my understanding of our shared history and future.

Exploring Catholicism in Korea: A Transformative Study Tour

4J Demi Sze

Joining the study tour to Korea, where we delved into the country’s rich religious history and culture, was an eye-opening journey.

A central figure in our journey was St. Andrew Kim Taegon, Korea’s first Catholic priest and martyr. His tragic story, alongside others like Yi Seunghun, who introduced Catholicism to Korea, showcased the struggles faced by believers during the Joseon period, where many were persecuted for their faith.

At the Catholic Hemi International Sanctuary, we learned about the brutal methods of persecution endured by early Christians. Witnessing their resilience was both heartbreaking and inspiring. Their sacrifices not only spread Catholicism but also fostered a spirit of unwavering commitment that continues to resonate today.

Visiting the demilitarized zone between South and North Korea was particularly impactful. Standing at the 38th parallel transformed abstract concepts from textbooks into a poignant reality.

4L Sophie Zhuang

As a non-Catholic, my experiences during the tour were equally enlightening. Attending my first public mass, I was initially unsure but quickly felt enveloped by the solemn atmosphere and strong sense of community among the congregation. Observing the dedication of believers deepened my appreciation for their faith.

The stories of martyrs highlighted the power of sacrifice in shaping one’s character and values. This tour not only enriched my understanding of Korean Catholicism but also allowed me to connect with the local community, fostering a sense of gratitude and respect for their traditions.

Overall, this study tour was a profound journey of learning and personal growth, reminding us all of the importance of understanding and appreciating different cultures and beliefs. I am grateful for the unforgettable experiences and the friendships formed along the way.
