Class of 2025 Speech Day with Alumnus Cardiologist Dr David Lo Ka-yip (’96)
On a memorable afternoon filled with pride and reflection, Shung Tak Catholic English College held its annual Speech Day for the Class of 2025. Distinguished Guest of Honour, Dr David Lo Ka-yip (Class of 1996), a highly respected Specialist in Cardiology and Resident Consultant in Cardiology at Hong Kong Adventist Hospital joined his alma mater to share this momentous occasion, a key milestone, the Speech Day of the Class of 2025.
In his heartfelt address, Dr Lo took the audience on a poignant journey, linking his cherished school days at Shung Tak to his life-saving work as a cardiologist. At the core of his message were two guiding principles that have shaped his career: compassion and servant leadership.
He shared a powerful story when he moved to a new hospital where a new operation theatre was being constructed. The building work disrupted the existing theatres, filling them with noise and dust, yet surgeries could not stop. Doctors, nurses, engineers and administrators all had to play their part under pressure. Dr Lo explained how he and his colleagues had to carefully prioritise patients, support one another through the chaos, and keep every team member motivated and understood.
“True teamwork,” he said, “is not just about doing your part. It is servant leadership in action—listening to one another, ensuring everyone feels valued, and making sure no one is left behind.” He reminded the students that the greatest achievements are never the triumph of a single individual, but the result of a team bound together by mutual care and respect.
In another deeply moving moment, Dr Lo recounted the experience of a patient who felt invisible because her highly skilled doctor had barely spoken during the consultation. “Patients don’t comely come to us for medical expertise alone,” he stressed. “They need to feel seen, heard, and truly cared for. Sometimes the most healing thing we can give is not a procedure or a prescription, but our time, our attentive ear, and genuine compassion.”
Dr Lo also paid warm tribute to the lasting influence of Shung Tak on his life. He fondly recalled making morning announcements in the school assembly —an experience that built his confidence in public speaking. The strong foundation in English he received at the College, he said, has been invaluable in communicating clearly with patients and their families. Even today, when delivering lectures to fellow doctors or other members of the public or associations, he continues to draw on the presentation and communication skills first homed in the classrooms and on the stage of Shung Tak.
To the graduating Class of 2025, Dr Lo’s message was clear: success is not measured only by titles or achievements, but by how we serve others with compassion and lead with a serving heart.
As our graduates step into the next chapter of their lives, they carry with them not only the academic excellence of Shung Tak, but also the enduring values so beautifully illustrated by one of our own.
Congratulations once again to the Class of 2025, and our deepest gratitude to Dr David Lo Ka-yip for an inspiring afternoon that reminded us all why we are proud to be part of the Shung Tak family.
