Through Fog and Rain: Leadership Training Camp in Ma On Shan

Between 25 and 27 February, we went on an amazing adventure in Ma On Shan that challenged us and trained us to become future leaders. Our adventure began at school with warm-up activities such as dodgeball. Afterwards, we went grocery shopping for the dinner menus we had prepared. We also learnt how to set up a tent and pack our bags—essential skills for camping and hiking without getting too exhausted. After the preparations, we took coaches to Ma On Shan Country Park and had dinner before starting the hike as the first part of our journey. Using most of the ingredients we bought, we enjoyed a great meal before the tiring journey ahead. The second part was hiking to the campsite. In pairs, our team took turns leading the way, and Abigail and I led first.

The route was manageable at the beginning, but we missed two road signs, so we became more vigilant and found the remaining signs. As we climbed higher, the fog grew thick and we could barely see even with our strongest flashlights. Still, we kept going, chatting with one another, and eventually spent two hours reaching Ngong Ping Campsite. The third part was camping. We were instructed to choose a suitable spot and pitch our tent, which was difficult with cow dung around the site. Although I did not sleep well, I enjoyed the mountain environment, even if the thick mist blocked the view. On the second day, we hiked down in slippery conditions after rain, taking extra care of ourselves and our teammates. We returned to Breakthrough Youth Village for more team-building activities. On the third day, we returned to school for a workshop preparing us for a service-learning event for Tin Shui Wai Catholic Primary School, applying what we learnt in practice. Overall, this unforgettable experience taught us survival skills, teamwork, resilience, and determination, helping us grow into future leaders.
