In late May, Permeance, our school’s volunteer team, and the Social Service Society organised a Rural Carnival for Chung Uk Tsuen villagers. Members of the two groups, along with other volunteers from school, were given the opportunity to learn in a fun way with the villagers during the event.
Our aim was to erase the boundaries between the city and villages. It was a chance also for us to learn more about the life of villagers. We not only were able to learn skills taught to us by the women of the village like the making of rice dumplings, but we were also able to share our knowledge of making mosquito repellent and eco-friendly plant decorations.
We also were able to play some games we had created and share the photo gallery showcasing the history of Hung Shui Kiu’s development.
Nowadays, as the economy develops rapidly, we seem to forget these small local villages and the beautiful countryside that we have been blessed with. Some may even become targets for urbanization and development. However, we need to take and make time to appreciate these villages which not only carry the memories of the villagers but is also part of our heritage.
We should always be reminded that although it is important for our city to develop, it is also very crucial for us to find a balance between urban development and preserving villages and the countryside.
