The First Night Photo Exhibition at the Fringe Club

Students of S3P had the opportunity to participate in The First Night Photo Exhibition, the opening event for ImpactHK’s winter Kindness Campaign fundraiser, on Tuesday, 25 November.

This exhibition, held at the Anita Chan Lai-ling Gallery in the Fringe Club, Central, showcased powerful photographs taken by individuals experiencing homelessness. Each photo was paired with a personal story from the contributor about their first night on the streets.

During a guided tour, ImpactHK representatives led 3P through interactive activities. They also listened to stories that fostered empathy and challenged perceptions. Read on to share the experience:

‘I appreciate ImpactHK for providing employment and training for people who are experiencing homelessness. It is great to hear that they provide different opportunities for training and authentic employment advice…’
‘In a story told by Lily about her first night at McDonald’s, she recounted the concerns she had at that time… She was later introduced to ImpactHK, who encouraged her to apply for transitional housing. Today, she’s grateful that she is able to contribute in any way she can to people in a similar situation.’

‘During the activities, we listened to many stories from people experiencing homelessness. I was surprised that some were educated or had even been company owners. Many were affected by COVID-19 when they lost their jobs, and their lives were upended. One example is a photographer named Walter, who was the owner of a successful company. He said the biggest challenge is taking care of their personal belongings and preventing the little they have from being stolen. He is grateful for the help of ImpactHK.’

What stood out for Akira is that people experiencing homelessness face serious isolation from other Hong Kong residents. She reminds us all not to be so judgemental of those who must sleep on the streets. Many find it difficult to get a job because of the high unemployment rate, but in fact, a lot of these people would like to contribute to society; they just do not have the chance to do so.
