On 31st March 2025, the History Department organized a community tour to Sheung Wan for S4 students to explore the life of local Chinese people a hundred years ago. The Sheung Wan Community Tour was a very interesting and eye-opening experience. We visited Man Mo Temple, the Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences, and the Western Market.
At Man Mo Temple, we felt calm and peaceful. We saw both locals and tourists burning incense and participating in traditional rituals. Our guide told us about the temple’s history and how it is dedicated to the gods. This made me reflect on how important cultural traditions are in shaping who we are.
Although the Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences was closed when we arrived, we still learned about its history. It used to be a Bacteriological Institute and played a crucial role in fighting against the plague in the past. This reminded me of how science and medicine have helped protect our communities over time.
At the Western Market, we saw colorful stalls selling textiles and flowers. There was also a beautiful banquet hall used for weddings. The conservation of the market’s building demonstrated how old buildings can still be useful and meaningful today.
This tour helped me gain a better understanding of the history and culture of Sheung Wan. It also highlighted the importance of protecting and remembering our local heritage. I felt inspired after the visit and would love to go back and explore more.
