S4 Bio Field Trip to HoKoon Center

A Biology Field Trip to Tsuen Wan Ho Koon Nature Education Cum Astronomical Centre

By 4L Natalie Tse

As soon as we S4 Biology students stepped off the coach at our destination — the Ho Koon Centre, we had stepped away from the concrete jungle and entered the world of nature. Trees and thousands of cicadas chirping their sweet songs greeted us.

As we ventured along the nature trails, we knew that there were countless more friendly critters just waiting to be discovered. The staff at the center guided us along the path, pointing out curiosities invisible to the casual observer. Insect eggs nestled within folded leaves, stick insects blended seamlessly into branches of trees, and lantern bugs huddled quietly on the trees.

We were one with nature as we took photos and collected each creature with great care.

Back in the lab, we examined the specimens closely. Field guides helped us understand what was happening, as did the microscopes, which revealed astonishing details. I used to think that all insects were scary to look at up close, but at that time, what I saw instead was simply fascinating.

After identification, we presented our research to the others, sharing the knowledge with passion and pride.

Beyond the excitement that came with the new discoveries, our field trip left us with a deeper admiration for nature. Insects may not be as beloved as dogs or cats, but they play vital roles in nature too. Perhaps if we look more closely, we’d learn to appreciate nature’s quiet beauty and welcome all creatures as friends.
