Life is a Gift

4M Pinky Chong

Recently, our Secondary 4 and Secondary 5 students participated in a journey of life exploration. We went to Man Mo Temple, a coffin shop, a crematorium and Ark Life Education House. The peaceful and solemn ambience in the memorial activity room is like giving a final farewell to them. It deepened my understanding of death and changed my perspective. The balustrade on the path outside is inscribed with words from their parents: ‘I’m sorry. I couldn’t bring you into this world.’ This was written by a Little Angel’s parents and left a deep impression on me. When I was reading them, I could totally imagine how the parents of ‘Little Angels’ felt.

In this activity, I learned more about local funeral services. It deepened my understanding of death and changed my mindset. Before this journey, I didn’t comprehend what death truly was, and I had no idea about it as it didn’t seem to concern me at all. However, after this experience, I finally understood how fragile life is. It reminded me to cherish my life and to live in the present. I said ‘I love you’ to my parents right after I arrived home that day. It was such an embarrassing sentence for me that I had never dared to say it before, but somewhere in the middle of my journey, that changed. As I realized how short life is, I understood that we should express our love to our parents from now on and cherish our time together.

Throughout this journey, the most impressive part of today was the crematorium. Stillbirths were previously labelled as biomedical waste, but they are now referred to as ‘Little Angels,’ which shows respect for every individual. Everyone deserves love and dignity. I reflected on myself and decided to treat each day as if it were my last, so as not to live with regret.
