Field Trip to Idea Maker HK

On 22nd May, our school’s reporter team organized a special field trip to Idea Maker HK, a professional 3D printing company. This visit was designed to enhance our reporting skills while exploring cutting-edge technology. As a member of the reporter team, I couldn’t wait to see real 3D printers in action!

Upon arrival, a friendly engineer named Henry welcomed us. He began by explaining the basic concept of 3D printing—it’s like constructing objects layer by layer with melted plastic. To illustrate this, he compared it to using a hot glue gun to build shapes, emphasizing the precision involved. He then showcased various printers, from small desktop models to large industrial machines.

The highlight of the trip was designing our own 3D keychains! Using user-friendly computer software, I created a keychain featuring my name. It took a few attempts to perfect the design, ensuring it was thick enough for successful printing. Watching the printer bring my design to life was magical—the nozzle moved expertly, laying down thin strands of plastic that gradually formed my name.

After the printing demonstration, we conducted interviews with several staff members. This was a great opportunity for us to practice asking thoughtful follow-up questions, which is essential for any aspiring reporter. At the end of the trip, we each received the keychain we had designed. Mine turned out a little rough on one side, but the staff explained that sometimes finished products need polishing.

They also showed us examples of more complex items they’ve printed, including detailed architectural models and even robot parts! This trip not only deepened my understanding of 3D printing but also set the stage for our upcoming interview with the company. I’m excited to apply what I learned about their technology and processes when we engage with the staff again. This hands-on experience has equipped me with valuable insights that will enhance our future reporting. I’m already looking forward to our next field trip!
