My class, 2P, went to the Tuen Mun Public Riding School on 18th March 2025 to learn about horses and experience feeding and riding them. Upon arriving, the instructors were waiting to teach us all about horses.
We spent the first thirty minutes watching videos about safety precautions and some exercises that the horses usually do. After finishing the videos, a trainer came in and divided our class into two groups, and then we were brought down to the stables to see and learn about the horses’ lives.
Down in the stables, we saw different horses and ponies, and were allowed to take pictures of them. The trainer introduced how the horses usually eat, sleep and drink in the stables. We were also taught about the different tools used to clean and brush the horses’ fur. The trainer allowed us to step into the stables and take a look inside, while also letting us touch the tools and brushes of the horses.
After being introduced to many of the tools, the horses were saddled up and prepared for us to ride later, and we went to see some Shetland ponies in the meantime. I was very surprised to know that the ponies, even though being very short and small, were already ten to twelve years old! The ponies were very nice to play with, and they entertained us for quite some time before we were led to ride the horses.
Before riding the horses, we were all told to put on something similar to a shower cap underneath the helmets. Then, we waited for our turn to mount the horses. For me, it was quite an exciting experience, as I feared falling off the horse, which was quite tall as well. I held on tightly to the reins, as instructed. Somehow, it felt like a roller coaster, so I was glad that a trainer was there to lead the horse and keep me company.
Soon after riding the horses, our whole class took pictures with the ponies. Then, we got a chance to feed them carrots! It was very funny when some students freaked out over the saliva of the ponies—haha! What an interesting and fun activity!
