We’re proud to feature two distinguished Shung Tak alumni – Raymond Liu and Bobby Tu – who are now pursuing their academic dreams at world-renowned institutions. Raymond Liu is currently studying Engineering at the University of Cambridge. Bobby Tu is undertaking a Double Degree in Computer Science and Business (specializing in Business Analytics) at Nanyang Technological University.
Overcoming Challenges When asked about their academic journeys, both alumni reflected on the obstacles they faced during secondary school. Raymond candidly shared that he struggled with language subjects in his early years, even failing all English writing assessments in junior forms. However, he credited Shung Tak’s extensive language support – both inside and outside the classroom – for helping him build confidence and improve his skills. Without attending any tutorial classes, Raymond proudly achieved Level 5 in English in the HKDSE.
For Bobby, time management was a major challenge. He found it difficult to revise and consolidate three years’ worth of senior secondary content within the short study break before the public exam. Looking back, he said if he had to do it all over again, he would definitely start reviewing key concepts earlier – for him it would have been during the summer break after his Secondary 5 year. Shaping Their Futures Both Raymond and Bobby emphasized how Shung Tak’s academic environment helped shape their career paths. They highlighted the importance of the school’s reliable predicted grades, which allowed them to make informed decisions about university applications.
Raymond also spoke passionately about the opportunities Shung Tak offers for students to explore their interests. He recalled participating in competitions like RoboMaster and Capture the Flag, which gave him and his teammates the chance to compete with peers across Hong Kong and beyond. He fondly remembered the countless hours spent in the STEM Coding Space, where Mr. Chan provided guidance while allowing the team autonomy to experiment and learn. These experiences sparked Raymond’s passion for engineering and programming.
Words of Wisdom Bobby offered heartfelt advice to current Shungtakians: “DSE is not everything. Make time to develop your hobbies and interests.” Raymond echoed this sentiment, stressing the importance of gaining knowledge beyond the DSE syllabus. He also shared practical exam tips: understanding the underlying concepts, especially in science subjects, makes it easier to retain information. He also encouraged students to form study groups to study with peers and learn collaboratively.
Looking Ahead Now studying abroad, both alumni acknowledge the challenges of adapting to new academic and cultural environments. Yet, they remain confident that the experiences and support they received at Shung Tak have equipped them well for the journey ahead.
