A New Beginning to Reflect on the New School Year

By 5M Edith Hui

On 1st September, we returned to school and attended the opening prayer service. It was a chance for us to reflect and prepare for the new school year. The reading during the ceremony was from 2 Thessalonians 3:6-13. It reminded us not to be lazy and to be hardworking, as St. Paul said, “If anyone does not work, neither should he eat.” Instead, we should follow those who work hard, day and night.

This is important for us, Shungtakians, as we should always pray and work, just like what St. Benedict has said, “Ora et Labora”. Fr. Ip also shared a story about Nik Wallenda, a famous high-wire artist who holds six Guinness World Records. In life, we face challenges, but we must not lose our faith, and we should focus on our goals.

If we look at the Gospel of Matthew, we are here to be the light and salt of the world. We are encouraged to live out our faith and share God’s goodness, truth, and love with those around us, glorifying our Father in heaven, which is our goal in life.

As we begin this new school year, we must remember that our work requires both faith and prayer. Faith gives us purpose and strength, while prayer helps guide our actions. Let’s start a great year with more faith and pray more for each other.

The Opening Prayer Service was a deeply meaningful experience. As I sang the hymns, I felt the love of God enveloping us. The blessings of God were not just contained in the words on the page; they resonated throughout the lyrics we sang, creating a profound sense of connection.

During the service, Fr. Ip spoke about growth and resilience, which inspired me to embrace a mindset of perseverance. This encouragement motivated me to keep trying and learning, no matter the challenges ahead. I am truly grateful for this experience and the renewed strength it has given me as I face the new academic year.
