Responsibility

Ma Xiangbo
馬相伯

Ma Xiangbo (1840–1939) was a renowned Chinese Jesuit priest, scholar, and educator whose life exemplified the value of responsibility. Born into a prominent Catholic family, Ma received a rigorous education and was ordained as a Jesuit priest in 1870. However, recognising the changing needs of his country during a time of national crisis and foreign aggression, Ma made the responsible decision to leave the priesthood and dedicate himself to education and public service. He founded several influential institutions, including Aurora University, Fudan University, and Fu Jen Catholic University, all aimed at cultivating talent and advancing modern knowledge in China. Ma also served as a diplomat, representing China in various countries and promoting cross-cultural understanding. Throughout his life, Ma Xiangbo demonstrated a deep sense of duty—not only to his faith and family, but to the intellectual and moral development of Chinese society. His legacy continues to inspire educators and students to embrace responsibility for the betterment of their communities.
