Faithful Catholic in China

Xu Candida 徐甘第大
Candida Xu (1607–1680) was a remarkable Chinese Catholic woman known for her deep faith and extraordinary kindness. As the granddaughter of Xu Guangqi, a prominent Christian convert, she played a vital role in supporting the early Catholic Church in China. After becoming a widow, Candida dedicated her life to helping others, generously using her wealth to fund churches, support Jesuit missionaries, and promote Christian education. She also organised charitable activities, such as community weaving projects, to raise money for missionary work. Beyond financial support, Candida cared deeply for the poor, sick, and abandoned infants, offering them comfort and aid. Her compassionate actions and leadership in the Christian community earned her the title ‘Feminine Pillar of Chinese Catholicism’. Candida Xu’s life exemplifies the value of kindness, showing how faith can inspire selfless service and genuine care for those in need. Her legacy continues to inspire acts of charity and love today.
