Li Zhizao (1571–1630) was a prominent Ming dynasty official, scholar, translator, and astronomer, recognised as one of the ‘Three Pillars of Chinese Catholicism’. Known for his open-mindedness and broad knowledge, Li played a key role in cultural and scientific exchanges between China and the West. His life exemplifies the value of discernment—he carefully evaluated and balanced the differences between Chinese traditions and Western Catholic teachings.
