Xu Guangqi (1562–1633), also known as Paul Xu, was a prominent Chinese scholar, scientist, and official during the late Ming dynasty. As one of the earliest Chinese converts to Catholicism, he integrated his faith with Confucian ideals, demonstrating deep compassion for the poor and needy. Xu used his knowledge to improve agricultural practices, authoring the Complete Treatise on Agriculture to promote better farming techniques, irrigation, and famine relief. He also introduced new crops like sweet potatoes and cotton, which helped farmers survive difficult times and reduced poverty. Beyond agriculture, Xu advocated for social reforms aimed at improving the welfare of ordinary people. His dedication to public service and practical solutions reflected his commitment to compassion and care for society’s most vulnerable. Xu Guangqi’s life and work embody the value of kindness, showing how faith and knowledge can combine to serve and uplift the needy.
