We walk by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7)

Welcome back! I hope you all enjoyed a restful summer break. It is wonderful to see so many bright, smiling faces as we gather to begin the new academic year. A very warm welcome to our new staff members and students — may God bless your journey as you join our STC family.

Our theme for September is “Be aware of blessings, find contentment and joy in all things.”

Over the holiday, I experienced a moment of deep joy. While waiting for a table at a restaurant I visited for the first time, a waiter greeted me with a warm smile: “Welcome, Ms. Lai!” I was surprised, and then a little embarrassed, as I recognised his face but could not immediately recall his name. He was a former student I had taught years ago. As we caught up, seeing how confident and fulfilled this young man had become reminded me of how blessed I am to be a teacher, with the opportunity to witness the growth of many wonderful young people.

Last year, I talked about hope as an active pursuit. While hope paints a vision of what could be, faith gives us the courage to leap into the unknown. As St Paul reminds us, “We walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). Faith is about taking that very first step to change for what you want to see even when you cannot see what lies ahead. When you feel overwhelmed by your studies, trust that your efforts matter. When you feel left out, trust that kindness counts and God is always by your side.

Teaching is also a daily leap of faith. As teachers, we cannot predict when or how each student will blossom. Yet, rooted in our trust in the Lord, we nurture every young person wholeheartedly, with full confidence in God’s plan. This is the same spirit that has guided Shung Tak since our founding in 1958.

Dear Shungtakians, you are the fruit of that faith and a true blessing to Shung Tak. Whenever you encounter a difficult subject or a challenging situation, let faith replace anxiety and recognise the blessings around you. Take a leap of faith, stretch yourselves, and share God’s love by supporting those who feel discouraged. Our shared faith grows stronger, and our joy deeper, when we walk together in Christ.
