Shifting our focus away from comparison

The theme of this month is “Be aware of blessings, find contentment and joy in all things,” and our house would like to take this opportunity to reflect on how seeing inspiration in others helps us live out this truth, especially when working together as a team in Blue House.

There are many inspiring figures in our life, whether it is Jesus, servant leaders like Mother Teresa,or a senior leader in our school, teachers and many more, we noticed a common trait: they don’t wait for the perfect opportunity to help others. Instead, they recognise the small blessings around them, and turn every obstacle into a chance to serve the others.

In 1 Thessalonians Chapter 5, Verses 16 to 18, the Bible teaches us:

“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

When St. Paul wrote this, the Thessalonian believers were facing persecution and grieving the loss of their church members. Yet, rather than giving up, they chose to stay strong, pray continuously, and face their challenges with gratitude, recognizing God’s presence even in tough times.

We see this same spirit brought to life in sports. In 2016, Leicester City Football Club achieved one of the greatest surprises in sports history by winning the English Premier League. Just a year earlier, they were at the bottom of the standings, barely avoiding relegation. Compared to multi-million-dollar rival clubs, Leicester City had limited resources and no famous superstars. Yet, instead of feeling inferior or complaining about what they lacked, the team chose to focus on what they did have, which is each other. They stayed humble, supported one another endlessly, and brought genuine joy and gratitude into every single match. Their historic victory wasn’t built on massive budgets, but on unity, trust, and appreciating every step of the journey.

As students, Leicester City’s story gives us a good lesson on how to live out our theme. In school life, whether in academics, house competitions, or personal goals, it is so easy to look at others and feel like we fall short. We often measure our worth by comparing our abilities, grades, or circumstances to those who seem faster, smarter, or more gifted. But Leicester City shows us that real success comes from shifting our focus away from comparison.

In athletics, victory is never guaranteed, and setbacks happen often. However, when we represent Blue House, we focus on appreciating the journey like the effort we put into training, the encouragement from our teammates, and the simple joy of being able to take part. Sportsmanship teaches us to celebrate the success of others while remaining proud of our own accomplishments.

It is easy to measure our worth by comparing ourselves to those around us. But true inspiration doesn’t ask us to copy someone else’s answers. It asks us to appreciate our own path. When we learn to celebrate others instead of competing with them, we find true peace and happiness.
