Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus (1 Thes 5:18)

Good morning, everyone.

Before we begin, I’d like to invite you to do something with me. Close your eyes, or look down at the ground, and take a moment to think back through your morning.

From the second your eyes opened, to walking through the school gates, to standing here right now in the playground… think carefully: What is one thing that happened this morning that you can be grateful for?

Now, as you’re thinking, keep this in mind—this thing doesn’t have to be something grand or life-changing. It doesn’t need to be winning an award or getting a huge gift. Gratefulness can be found in the smallest moments: the warmth of your blanket when you woke up, saying good morning to your family this morning, a smile from a friend on the bus, the light rail arriving shortly after you arrived at the station, or the light turning green just as you arrive at the crossing. Perhaps it is simply making it here safely today.

We often go through our days waiting for big, amazing moments to make us happy. But true contentment isn’t about having everything you want—it’s about recognising the good in what you already have. In the Bible, 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 reminds us:

‘Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.’

We are told to be grateful ‘in all circumstances’—not just on the best days, but every day, even when things don’t turn out the way we had hoped. Take comfort in knowing that everything happens because it is part of God’s plan for you. And God is good. When we train ourselves to notice the small blessings already around us, we find a steady kind of joy that stays with us no matter what kind of day lies ahead.

So, as you go about your day, keep your eyes open for those small blessings, and remember to give thanks for them. Thank you.
