On September 28th, I participated in an elderly visit volunteering event, organized by Caritas District Elderly Centre – Yuen Long (Tin Chak Centre) along with other schoolmates. When we arrived at the centre, we received instructions and reminders from the social worker. Then we were divided into several groups for the visit. The elderly were delighted to see us which was so evident from their facial expression.
Each of them had diverse life experiences, and they were so enthusiastic in sharing with us their daily and past experiences, which has changed my previous thoughts about them – I worried about the generation gap. This experience was profound for me, as it allowed me to truly feel the happiness of giving back to the community. It is so obvious that those elderly living alone are the ones that need our help the most. If everyone were willing to take a step forward and lend a helping hand to society, the impact would be tremendous. Doing volunteer work not only benefits others but also contributes to our personal growth, allowing us to build stronger connections with society as well as shaping us into a more empathetic individual.
