Influence Life with Life- Pay Love Forward By 4J Daisy Liu

Shungtakians are always looking for volunteering opportunities in the community by looking for ways to best use our knowledge to help people in need.

‘Pay Love Forward’ is an organization that provides a platform for students to make use of the knowledge we learned in Shung Tak to give free tutorials to children who are facing challenges in learning English. It hopes to promote the culture of love and giving. Founded in Hong Kong, the Catholic-based, Pay Love Forward, believes that every child deserves a bright future. It hopes to empower young people to help children in need as through the process of individualized teaching, children may be able to overcome their fear and develop their interest and self-confidence in learning English.

Shungktakians joining this program will be paired up with students from primary to secondary school, giving them tutorial classes once a week using an online platform. The content of the course includes helping the children do textbook revisions and preparing for their dictation and quizzes in a trustworthy and friendly environment.

Shungtakians would not only be acting as teachers but as friends giving informative advice. As one of the volunteering tutors for the previous year, I found satisfaction when seeing my students improve step by step. My students were quiet and shy at first as they were lacking in confidence. They were also afraid to pronounce the words wrongly. As the days went by, as our relationship grew closer, their willingness to learn English grew.

I also benefitted as I thought of more fresh and interesting teaching methods to boost my students’ interest. I am also more patient in dealing with different situations. Today one of my students also shares her daily school life with me through social media in English. It is truly amazing to see how I really did make a difference for her. “Students may sometimes forget what you have taught, but they will never forget how you made them feel.” A small step made by us will truly affect the growth of children, as we influence their life with our life. Let’s cherish the knowledge we gained in school and lend a helping hand to the needy.
