Our visit to St Jerome Church in Tin Shui Wai was our chance to learn more about the church which belongs to the district our school is in and to learn more about the great saint.
As I entered St. Jerome Church, a sense of peace came over me. The Cross in the middle of the Church and the stained-glass windows came into view. The Cross, in the middle of the Church, had Jesus opening His hands to us. His eyes are gentle, his hair flutters in the wind and his compassionate countenance appears as if He is looking at us directly. He is bringing the good news of His resurrection.
This is the resurrected Christ. Sr Yu Wai-ying, was the interior designer of the Church and is behind the church’s impressive and beautiful stained-glass windows depicting the first six days of Creation in the biblical book of Genesis. In the center behind the altar, other windows show New Testament scenes such as the Annunciation, descent of the Holy Spirit and the Nativity.
On the far left, we can also see a vivid portrait of Our Lady. A staff member of the Church also introduced St. Jerome who is best known for translating the Bible into Latin. He is the patron saint of translators, librarians and Biblical scholars. “Ignorance of scripture is ignorance of Christ’ is key for St Jerome. He feels we need to learn more about Christ and to put our lives, our gifts, and our talents wholly at the service of God. Our visit brought new insights and reminds us all that as a student of a Catholic school, we should learn more about Christ and give ourselves to the service of others.
